Mary Maria Bysouth married Frederick William WOODHOUSE, reg Mar qtr 1846 in Cambridge district (ref FreeBMD). Her DC says the marriage was at Barnwell, Cambridgeshire. The marriage was 12 Jan 1846 at St Andrew The Less, Cambridge (ref findmypast).

"Frederick Woodhouse, sporting and livestock painter, was born at Hadley near Barnet, Essex, on 26 December 1820. Both his father, Samuel Woodhouse, and his uncle, John Thomas Woodhouse, were painters as was Frederick, although as a young man he spent some time in the Essex Yeomanry Cavalry."
Ref Dictionary of Australian Artists Online at

Ref 1851 census. Cambridgeshire, England. Parish of Royston. Fish Hill, Royston.
Together with children Frederick W. (4) and Claude (2):
Frederick W Woodhouse. Head. Mar. Age 29. Artist, Landscape Painter. Born Middlesex, Hadley.
Mary M Woodhouse. Wife. Mar. Age 26. Born Herts, Barley.

The family (Mary Maria, Frederick and children) sailed to Australia as assisted passengers on the vessel 'Parsee' leaving Southampton 17 Feb 1858, arr Port Phillip (Melbourne, Victoria) on 14 May 1858. They were listed as Church of England, from Herts, and children listed as Frederick (10), Claude (8), Clarence (6), James(3). Ellis Bysouth was also on the ship (ref Victorian shipping records).

They purchased their home at Collingwood where two more children were born. Mary Maria was a very capable person, and her husband a multi-talented, famous, popular man. Much entertaining was provided in their home, and often guests were accommodated for varying period. So beside caring for her husband and the 6 boys there was the added responsibility of frequent hostessing. A boyhood friend and riding companion of Frederick, well-known poet, politician and skilled horse rider, Adam Lindsay Gordon, was a frequent visitor to their home for meals and accommodation. John Jacob Holyoak, a Member of the British House of Commons and a friend of Frederick, stayed in their home at Geelong (1860s) for several weeks. Frederick Woodhouse was a renowned artist. In 1861 the Victorian Academy of Arts awarded Frederick the 100 pound prize for his painting 'The Settlers Meeting with Buckley' in the Historical Painting competition. Mary Maria was his chosen model for the mother in this well known, treasured icon. (Notes supplied by Ed Woods 2007).

Mary died 22 Sep 1876, Cotham Rd, Kew, buried 24 Sep 1876, Melbourne Cem.(Vic reg 9335, ref her DC).
Frederick was the informant at death of Mary 22 Sep 1876 in Victoria. She was also known as Maria (as in the DC of her son Clarence).

"Australian Colonial Sporting Painters: Frederick Woodhouse and Sons" by Colin Laverty (1980) gives information about Frederick and his sons Frederick, Herbert, Edwin and Clarence, and his painting, lithographs and wood-engravings.

Frederick married for a second time, details not available at this time.

"Frederick Woodhouse continued to paint until his death at the age of eighty-nine, sending paintings to the Yarra Sculptors' Society exhibitions up until 1908. He died at Melbourne on 29 December 1909, survived by his second wife and five of the six sons from his first marriage, four of whom were also painters. " Ref Dictionary of Australian Artists Online at
http://www.daao.org.au/main/read/6738.

There were notices in the Argus newspaper 31 Dec 1909 and 1 Jan 1910 giving details of the funeral at Brighton Cemetery.

"Illustrated Australian News" 8 Jul 1878 - "DEATHS: BYSOUTH - On 24th June at Gloucester Cottage, Grattan St, near Drummond St, Carlton, of consumption, Elizabeth Ann, wife of Mr. James Bysouth, & eldest daughter of Mr. John Bickle of Tavistock, Devonshire, England, in the fifty third year of her age."

James married (2) 10 Jun 1880, in the Registrar of Marriages' Office, Gore Street, Fitzroy, to Rachel PEEL, born c1849, Belfast, Ireland (Vic reg 2522). Rachel was dau of Samuel Brown, farmer, and Sarah nee Currie. She became a widow in 1877 with one dead child; occ domestic living at Flemington. No issue with James Bysouth.

In James' Will dated 1896 he leaves all his belongings to daughter Sarah Ann (ref Will).

Rachel died 1898 at Richmond (Vic reg 9483).

James died 12 Sep 1899, 55 Dover Street, Richmond (Vic reg 11095), buried 14 Sep 1899 Melbourne Gen Cem. Member of Independent Church. The informant on the death certificate was Charles Brissenden, Authorised Agent. It is assumed that this is the man who was the father of his daughter Sarah's children between 1895 and 1901.

At the time of his death James was an ex-Senior Constable of Police. In 'Recollections of a Victorian Police Officer' by John Sadleir (Penguin Colonial Facsimiles) on page 287 is the paragraph "The last-named, best known as Jimmy Bysonth (sic) , was a short, bow-legged man, always at high pressure, and constantly engaged in fierce encounters with larrikins. He was by trade a coachbuilder, and it was ever a source of satisfaction and pride to him that he was the constructor of the first 'Black Maria' used in Australia! " (Ref. thanks to Fay Johnson.)
