"The Liberty of Norton Folgate was a distinct administrative unit between the Bishopsgate ward of the City to the south and the parish of St Leonard Shoreditch to the north. Its origin was as the area of land occupied by the inner precinct of the Priory and Hospital of St Mary Spital. This was dissolved during the Reformation, but the land, reverting to the Crown, retained its status as an extra-parochial liberty. Within the 8.7 acres (35,000 m2) of the former liberty are Folgate Street and Spittle Square in Spitalfields to the east and a small area of land between Primrose Street and Worship Street on the west side of the main road." "Peter Cazaly of the Liberty of Norton Folgate, Bachelor, and Sarah Nash of the same, Spinster. Married in this Church by Banns this first day of July in the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty four by me (?) Curate. This Marriage was solemnized between us Peter Cazaly, Sarah Nash in the presence of (?), Anne Cazaly." (ref Ancestry London Marriages)
See above for description of the Liberty of Norton Folgate. The Banns of the marriage between Peter Cazaly bachelor and Sarah Nash spinster both of the Liberty of Norton Folgate were read on 13 Jun, 20 Jun & 27 Jun at Christ Church, Spitalfields (ref Ancestry London marriages).

Sarah was born 20 Dec 1759, bap 30 Dec 1759 at St George In The East parish church, Cannon Street Road, Stepney, baptised at 10 days. She was daughter of John Nash and Ann Smith of Church Lane. (Ref Findmypast, source ref X024/123 Docklands Ancestors).

Peter worked at the Bank of England. He was elected (phrase for employed) to the Bank on 9 March 1797; the minutes of the meeting of the Directors of the Bank list 38 'servants' who were chosen, each one by recommendation; Peter was recommended by a Mr Simeon. It is likely that he would have provided financial security for his term of employment. He worked in the Bank Note Office, and when he died in 1806 his wages were £110; he appears to have died 29 December (ref A.Cazaly 2012 for copies of the documents).

In 1799 a number of forged notes were in circulation signed P.Cazaly, but it is unclear whether Peter was the unfortunate victim of this situation:
"Sunday two men were apprehended in Manchester, on a charge of issuing forged five pound Bank of England Notes, great quantities of which are in circulation - they are most wretchedly executed, all are signed 'C. Jeiks," and entered 'P. Cazaly'." (ref Newcastle Courant, Sat 21 Sep 1799).
"A caution to the public.- A number of forged notes are now in circulation, chiefly 5l. notes. The only way of knowing them is from the coarseness of the paper; the water mark is clumsily executed, with the figures of 35 in the centre, which appears to be done with something that has cut a part of the 3 through.- They are most of them entered P. Cazaly, and signed C. Jeeks, and dated 16th February, 1798." (ref Reading Mercury, Mon 30 Sep 1799).

Peter was buried 31 Dec 1806 at Christ Church, Spitalfields, his abode St M B Green [St Matthew Bethnal Green] age 44 (ref Ancestry London Bap Marr & Bur); his headstone was inscribed "Peter Cazaly of the Bank of England" (ref A.Cazaly 2012).

In 1833 Sarah inherited a substantial amount of money from her cousin (by marriage) Mary Ann Cazaly:

Pallot's Marriage Index has James Cazaly, b. of St John Hackney, by licence.

In 1845 & 1846 James was an Accountant living at Barrett Grove at Elizabeth & James's baptisms (ref Ancestry London baptisms).

Ref 1851 census. Middlesex, England. Parish of Stoke Newington. Address: 1 Barrett Grove, Stoke Newington.

Elizabeth Cazaly. Wife. M. Age 45. Born Chester.

James, of Barrett Grove, died 9 June 1854 in Hackney, London, and was buried on 17 June 1854 in Abney Park Trust Cemetery, Hackney (ref Abney Park records). The Times of 13 June 1854 (page 1, col A) reported
'On the 9th inst., at 1, Barrett-grove, Stoke Newington, of chronic bronchitis, James Cazaly, Esq., aged 76, upwards of 60 years clerk in the house of Messrs. Doxat and Co., merchants.' (Going by the dates he was actually 74.)

A notice appeared in the Times:
"MR. JAMES CAZALY, formerly of Claremont Cottage, and late of No. 1, Barrett-grove, Stoke Newington, Middlesex, died in June, 1854. - Any person who may possess or who can give any INFORMATION respecting any WILL, Money, or other Property of the deceased, are requested to send the same to his widow, Mrs. Cazaly, of No. 1, Barrett-grove, Stoke Newington; or to communicate with her, or her solicitors, Messrs. Gregson and Son, of No. 8, Angel-court, Throgmorton-street, London, and they will be liberally REWARDED for their trouble." (The Times, Sep 5, 1854.)

Elizabeth and daughter Catherine arrived at Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, approx 1856 (the year obtained from her death certificate) and then lived at Mount Weatherboard near Ballarat (ref Ballarat Star newspaper 26/10/1903 which incorrectly stated that the husband James also arrived; he had already died in London.) Her son Henry purchased a block of land at Weatherboard Hill, Parish of Burrumbeet, Shire of Ballarat (Allotment 6, Section C) at the land sales in 1857. All of the children except the two eldest, Charles and Charlotte, emigrated to Australia, but the exact emigration dates are not known.

It seems most likely that the family came out in several groups. Firstly, Peter and Henry in either 1854 or 1855 but definitely by mid 1855, as there was a letter waiting for Henry then in Melbourne GPO. Then Owen and John who are probably the passengers listed as arriving on the vessel New Great Britain on 23 Feb 1856. Following this, Elizabeth and the remaining children Catherine, James and Elizabeth arrived during the same year.

In a list of unclaimed letters at the Ballarat Post Office for 1st September 1857, both Mrs Cazaly and E Cazaly (probably daughter Elizabeth) are listed. (ref Trove, The Star Ballarat, Tues 1 Sep 1857).

In the 1861 Ballarat directory the Cazaly family, Mrs Cazaly and various children, are listed as living at Drummond Street - Mrs Cazaly, J Cazaly, John Cazaly, H Cazaly, O Cazaly, P Cazaly.

Elizabeth's address was Drummond Street, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, at her death. Elizabeth died 3 Aug 1863 at Ballaarat West, Victoria, Australia (Vic reg 5762), buried Ballaarat Old Cemetery (grave AN/7/4 with no headstone). She died of phthisis; her son Owen was the informant; the witnesses to her burial were her son in law William Little and her son Peter Cazaly, and all nine children were listed as living, with their ages (ref Death Certificate). Also buried in her grave in 1889 was her infant great-grandson, William Fitzgerald Cazaly (son of William and grandson of Peter).

Born 24 Jan 1766; bap 11 Feb 1766 at The Artillery French Huguenot Spitalfields London, Marguerote Anne, dau of Etienne Cazaly & Sara (ref FamilySearch C04905-1).
Through a process of elimination, this person is the most likely to be the "Mary Ann Cazaly" who married Bartholomew Frost in 1785. This information is placed here but can be moved if a more suitable candidate is found. Another possibility is that there was a Mary Ann born in the family at the beginning of 1767 for whom a baptism has not been found.

Marriage 20 Jun 1785 at St Mary's, Whitechapel, Middlesex, of Mary Ann Cazaly to Bartholomew FROST; the record states "Bartholomew Frost, Batchelor of this Parish and Mary Ann Cazaly, Spinster of the same, were married in this Church by Licence, this twentieth day of June in the year 1785 by me Edwd. Robsoni Curate. This marriage was solemnized between us Bartholomew Frost, Mary Ann Cazaly [her signature] in the presence of John Esam, John Marks" (ref Ancestry London Marriages).

This document makes several references to the ship Thetis and its Commander, Justinian Nutt, in 1788, 1790 and 1791, en route to Bombay and Whampoa or similar places. It is reasonable to assume that William was employed by the East India Company in 1792. No mention is found of what happened to him.
