Issue of Richard Chapple and Ann Maria Exon
1.   Richard CHAPPLE
Born 10 May 1849 at 19 Lower Borough Walls, St James (? Parish), Bath, Somerset (ref Barry Chapple).

Ref 1851 census. Somerset, England. Parish of Trinity Walcot. City of Bath. Address: 4 Kingsmead St, Bath.
Together with his mother, grandmother and uncle:
Richard Chappel (sic). Son. Un. Age 1. Born St Jas Bath.

Came to Australia May 1855 age 5 on the Tasmania.

The following occurrence in Ballarat is almost certainly about him:
"FORGERY. Joseph Jones (35) pleaded not guilty to an indictment for forging a cheque. There was another count for uttering.
Townsend McDermott, barrister, deposed that the cheque produced, purporting to be drawn by him, had not been drawn by him. The signature was utterly unlike his signature. Richard Chapple, a boy 11 years old, said he met prisoner at the corner of Doveton street, and prisoner asked him to get the cheque cashed at Jones's Criterion Store, but Mr Pyke refused to change it. Prisoner then sent him to Wymond's shop, but they also refused to cash it, and when the boy got back to the place prisoner was gone. He waited a long time for the prisoner, and then gave the cheque to the police. He was sure prisoner was the man.
Samuel L. Pyke corroborated as to the production of the cheque. L.L. Mount, clerk in the Union Bank, deposed that the signature was not that of Mr McDermott's handwriting. Detective Bailey proved the arrest of the prisoner.
This closed the case for the Crown, and the prisoner called serveral witnesses, including his own daughter, a child 12 years old, to prove that at the time alleged by the boy Chapple he was at home.
His Honor having summed up, the jury found a verdict of not guilty."
(ref The Ballarat Star, 18 Jul 1860).

Possible next sighting
"Four boys, it appears, who had been sent to the reformatory ship Deborah made their escape by deserting from the party which visited the Exhibition on the 17th inst. A reward of £5 is offered for the recapture of each of the boys." (ref Trove, The Ballarat Star, Mon 28 Jan 1867)

Note: The Deborah was a juvenile reformatory ship. It held 25 lads learning the operation of ships, and a certain amount of reading and writing. The purpose was to put the lads into possession of a trade or calling, but also to remove them from old scenes and bad companions. The majority of them are homeless little wanderers, more sinned against by society than sinning. (ref an article named Juvenile Reformatories, in the Bendigo Advertiser Sat 23 July 1864, in Trove)

"See Police Gazette, 24th January, 1867, p. 47.
The following are the descriptions of the four boys who absconded from the Reformatory ship "Deborah":
William Edwards [etc etc]
Richard Bignall alias Chapple, English, aged 15, 5 feet 1 1/2 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, dark eyebrows, scar top of left shoulders; no convictions. His father lives in Sydney.
Daniel Kelleher [etc etc]
William Pullen[etc etc] - 5th February, 1867." (ref Ancestry, NSW Police Gazette, published 27 Feb 1867)

However, in the Tasmania Reports of Crime 1867, page 35, under the heading Extracts from the Victoria Police Gazette of the 14th February 1867 - see Government Gazette, 25th January 1867, p.175, Chief Secretary's Office, Melbourne, 24th January 1867, it states that "His father lives in Ballarat". So it appears that the the slightly later version has been amended and is hopefully more accurate. (Reference John Chapple 2013)

"WILLIAMSTOWN. - Richard Bignall, a lad sixteen years of age, was brought before Messrs. Call and Dowman on Friday, charged with deserting from the reformatory hulk in Hobson's Bay, in company with three other lads, on the 17th ult., during a visit to the Exhibition. The prisoner was reprimanded, and ordered to be privately whipped and sent on board." (Trove, The Argus Melbourne, Wed 13 February 1867)
