In 1862 a publication called "Veterinarian: London 1862 Vol 35 page 785" (found in Google Books) gives interesting information into the life of those working in the mines. Ireported that an inquest was opened at the Guildhall, Bath, on Friday evening, September 26th by the city coroner on the body of a boy (Isaac West) aged 14 who died from glanders. Glanders is a contagious infectious disease that occurs primarily in horse, mules and donkeys. It can be contracted by humans and is a bacterial infection. Joseph Crew, foreman of the smiths' works at Camerton Coal Works, said - 'I usually attend to the horses at the coal pit when they are sick, except in any serious case, when a veterinary surgeon is employed. I have been at the works twenty-two years. I know the glanders. I examined all the horses underground, nine in number, yesterday, and found them in a healthy state; the horses above ground are all healthy.' (reference above)
