2.   Mary DUNSFORD
Bap 27 Nov 1763 at Broad Clyst, Devon, dau of William Dunsford (ref IGI).

Marriage 30 Apr 1787 at Topsham, Devon of Mary Dunsford to Joshua LIGHTFOOT (ref IGI). If he was the father of Charles, he was a confectioner (sometimes known as Joseph) (ref marriage cert of his son Charles). Joshua was bap 26 Aug 1764 at Aylesbeare, Devon, son of Joshua Lightfoot & Eliz (ref IGI).

Of the children listed below, baptisms of numbers 2, 3, 4 & 5 are specifically to Joseph & Mary, Joshua & Mary, Joshua & Mary, and Joseph & Ann. There is a cross against the last entry which may indicate a mistake. (Number 1 is not known.) It is assumed here that Joseph and Joshua are the same, particularly as the father of Charles was given as Joseph in his baptism and Joshua in his marriage. There is obviously some uncertainty with these children and whether there were more.

There is not enough evidence yet to be certain whether Charles Lightfoot was the son of Ann or Mary Dunsford. In Ann's favour, both his baptism (though marked with a cross) and his death give Ann as his mother. Against Ann, there has been no marriage found of an Ann Dunsford to a Joshua Lightfoot, the name of Charles' father on his marriage certificate, whereas there is a marriage of Mary Dunsford to Joshua Lightfoot at the right time and place. Charles was born the standard 2 years after Mary's last child and baptised at the same church. It is remotely possible that Mary died and Joshua married Ann, or that Charles was born out of wedlock.

Mary's death (burial) not found in fmp.

Ref 1841 census. Devonshire, England. Civil Parish of Colaton Raleigh. Registration district of St Thomas. Address: Greatford, Colaton Raleigh.
Together with Joseph Perry (35), Farmer, his family, and a female servant:
Joshua Lightfoot. Age 75. Ind. Born in Devon.

Death reg of Joshua Lightfoot Mar qtr 1843 at St Thomas dist, Devon (ref FreeBMD). Burial of Joshua Lightfoot 2 Apr 1843 at Colaton Raleigh aged 79 (ref fmp Devon Burials image).

5.   Agniss DUNSFORD
Bap 17 Mar 1776 at Farringdon, Devon, dau of William & Ann Dunsford (ref IGI). Broad Clyst is about 8 km (about 5 miles) from Farringdon which makes this a likely scenario.

It is virtually certain that an Agniss Dunsford, bap 1776 at Farringdon, Devon, daughter of a William and Ann Dunsford, is the ancestor of this writer (Libby), going by the relatively unusual name and the knowledge of her marriage to James SERLE in 1804.

Marr 3 Jan 1804 in Kenton Parish of Agness Densford to James SERLE (ref KPR and K IGI records). James was bap 27 Mar 1777 in Kenton Parish, Devon, England (ref KPR and K IGI records). James and Agnes were living in Starcross in the 1841 census. See the SERLE tree for all descendants.

Agnes died 18 Nov 1845 at "5 pm at 50 Drummond St London " (ref her death cert). It seems she fell ill while visiting her son and family. It was reg Dec qtr 1845 at St Pancras district (ref FreeBMD).

James died 17th Oct 1855. The death was reg Sep qtr 1855 at St Pancras district (ref FreeBMD).

'Buried in the churchyard at Starcross, Devon. The inscription reads "In memory of James Serle who died October 17th. 1855 aged 78. Also of Agnes Serle his wife who died Nov 18th 1845 aged 69 and was buried in St. Giles' Cemetery, Old St. Pancras, London".

FROM WHOM LIBBY SHADE IS DESCENDED.

    Children:
  1. James SERLE born 1804 at Starcross, Devon. His eldest daughter was Eliza Serle born 1832 at Starcross, died in Victoria, Australia.

Eliza kept a short diary for part of her life, which is in the hands of family members. It contains a mixture of notes on events and financial records. It starts in 1853 when her father and two brothers Fred and Edwin left London for Australia, and ends with some newspaper cuttings. Two of these refer to Charles Lightfoot, whom subsequent discoveries have allowed us to connect to his mother, who was either Mary or Ann Dunsford and a sister of Agnes/Agniss Dunsford, Eliza's grandmother.

These two cuttings are as follows.
"MARRIAGES. NICOL- LIGHTFOOT. - (Golden Wedding.) - On the 22nd February, 1860, at St Peter's Church, Melbourne, by the Rev. H. H,. P. Handfield, John Nicol, telegraph manager, Daylesford, to Harriet Hancock, youngest daughter of Mr. Charles Lightfoot, Studley Park. Present address, "Lindisfarne," Manning-road, Malvern East."

"MARRIAGES. BREEN - LIGHTFOOT. (Golden Wedding). - On 14th May, 1863, at Scots' Church, Collins-street, Melbourne, by the Rev. I. Hetherington, Michael Duggan Breen, surveyor, to Elizabeth Deborah Courtis, eldest daughter of Charles Lightfoot, Esq., of Exeter, England.
