Bap of Fanny Elizabeth Fitt 28 Jun 1848 at Hackney St John, Middlesex, dau of Charles & Elizabeth; Morpeth Terrace; Lard Manufacturer (ref Ancestry London baptisms image). She subsequently used the spelling Fannie, and met William in Invercargill, New Zealand.

William's career was in banking. There is a long description of his farewell from Invercargill and move to Timaru in 1891 in NZ papers past, Southland Times, 19 Nov 1891. In 1891 he was manager of the local branch of the Union Bank of Australia, and had lived there for 15 years. He stated that he was educated with a view to a mercantile life, and in 1861 joined the private bank of Olding, Sharpe and Co. of Clement's Lane, London. In 1866 the bank failed, and was wound up. He joined the Union Bank of Australia in London in 1866, and after three months he was transferred to the colonial staff and sailed for Australia. After two years' service in Melbourne he was ordered to New Zealand. After a number of posts at Nelson, Wellington, Christchurch, Wellington again, Dunedin, then he joined the Invercargill branch in 1876. He met his wife in Invercargill but for some reason married her in Melbourne.

William appears in various New Zealand directories at Timaru, Canterbury, NZ, e.g. 1895, 1897, 1898-1899, and on the electoral roll in 1914.

"MUTILATION AFFECTS BEQUEST. In making her will in 1910, Mrs. Elizabeth Deborah Courtice Breen, of Merioneth, Waverley road, East Malvern, bequeathed two valuable pictures - "A Snow Scene" by George Morland, and a portrait of her grandfather, by Thomas Lawrence, R.A., to her two sons. Subsequently she told her sons that they might have the pictures in her lifetime, and having done so, cut the paragraph out of her will, and, unfortunately, in doing so cut out her signature, but not the signatures of the attesting witnesses. Her sons did not take the pictures from her home, and she rewrote the paragraph and her signature on a paper, which she affixed to the will. The matter came before Mr. Justice Hood yesterday on an application that probate be granted. After hearing Mr. R. E. Hayes in support of the application, Mr. Justice Hood held that in the circumstances the signatures of the attesting witnesses was sufficient to enable him to grant probate on the unmutilated portion of the will, but as to the pictures, the signature not having been witnessed when the bequest was reinstated, probate could not apply to that portion of the estate."
