He stated that he was educated with a view to a mercantile life, and in 1861 joined the private bank of Olding, Sharpe and Co. of Clement's Lane, London. In 1866 the bank failed, and was wound up. He joined the Union Bank of Australia in London in 1866, and after three months he was transferred to the colonial staff and sailed for Australia. After two years' service in Melbourne he was ordered to New Zealand. After a number of posts at Nelson, Wellington, Christchurch, Wellington again, Dunedin, then he joined the Invercargill branch in 1876. He met his wife in Invercargill but for some reason married her in Melbourne. William appears in various New Zealand directories at Timaru, Canterbury, NZ, e.g. 1895, 1897, 1898-1899, and on the electoral roll in 1914.
