10.		John GLOAG Bap 11 Apr 1818 at Aspatria, Cumberland (ref IGI). John went to sea at the age of about 16. He was indentured for 4 years, on 13 Jan 1836, together with his cousin William Grave (son of Thomas Grave and Eleanor Hayton) of the same age, on the vessel Hinda (ref Ancestry UK, Apprentices Indentured). On 18 Feb 1851 a Master's Certificate of Service was signed showing that John Gloag was born at Aspatria on 8 Mar 1818, and was employed in the capacities of App, Mate & Master for 15 years in the British Merchant Service in the Foreign Trade (see attached, ref Ancestry UK and Ireland Master and Mates Certificates). John died 8 Dec 1851. "19/12/1851 - Drowned, in the wreck of the Robert Bradford, off Holyhead, on the 8th inst, Captain J. Gloag, aged 33. He was the son of Mr. J. Gloag, innkeeper, of Aspatria. He had made the shortest passage ever known from the Cape of Good Hope to the English Channel, when he was swallowed up in "the dark unfathomed caves of ocean," along with eleven others out of a crew of eighteen, not more than fifty yards from land."
