Late of Beechworth and Myrtleford." (ref Trove, The Age, Wed 3 Aug 1938)

The mention of a sister Elizabeth (Mrs Howell) is not accurate. Elizabeth's ancestry has been traced; her parents Samuel Broadfoot and Elizabeth Currie, her grandparents George Broadfoot and Jane Wallace (who married 1823 in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, Scotland). It is possible that George Broadfoot was connected to James's grandfather, James Broadfoot, who was bap in 1805. This would make them distant cousins. Or it might have been the connection of the name in Beechworth. I have documented Elizabeth's tree in the FamilySearch tree.

"FORMER BEECHWORTH EDITOR. Mr. James Broadfoot, aged 68 years, who died on Monday at Albert Park, Melbourne, was born in Beechworth, where he resided for 47 years. For 33 years of that period he was connected with "The Ovens and Murray Advertiser." In Beechworth, Mr.Broadfoot was associated with various sporting, political, and social bodies, and was for a time secretary of the Australian Labor Party. He was well-known and respected throughout the district. While editor of "The Ovens and Murray Advertiser"' he was a diligent worker for the progress of the town and district. He married in Beechworth Miss Laura Falck, members of whose family were also widely known and respected, and were amongst the pioneers of this town. Mr. Broadfoot is survived by his widow and by his son Harold, and daughters — Elsie (Mrs. Clarkson,North Fitzroy), Nellie (Mrs. Martin, Brighton), and Doreen (Mrs. Walter Mills, Myrtleford). The interment was in Springvale cemetery on Wednesday." (ref Trove, Albury Banner and Wodonga Express, Fri 5th Aug 1938)

Born 26 Jul 1875 at Church Street, Sth Richmond, Victoria, Australia (Vic reg 18753).

Bap 29 Aug 1875 at St Stephens, Richmond (ref Ancestry).
Known as John (4) Grierson.

"CHURCH OF ENGLAND SUNDAY SCHOOL ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Church of England Sunday School Association, for the distribution of prizes and certificates to successful Sunday school children, was held last night in the Temperance Hall. The Bishop of Melbourne presided, and there was a good attendance of ladies and gentlemen. Mr. E.D. Puckle, hon. secretary of the association, read the prize, honour, and pass lists of the senior and junior divisions of the children of the Sunday schools as follows:-
[inter alia] JUNIOR DIVISION. 6. J.B. Grierson, St Stephen's, Richmond." (The Argus 17 May 1887)

Marr 2 Jul 1907 at St Stephens C of E, Richmond, Victoria (Vic reg 5427R) to Margaret Elizabeth SAMPSON; his age was 32, residence Elm Grove, Richmond, Compositor, bachelor; her age was 31, residence Docker St Richmond, spinster; witnesses Harold Sampson, E Sampson (ref original Certificate of Marriage on file). She was born on 18 May 1876 at Leicester, Leicestershire, dau of Gideon Sampson & Selina Gale. See SAMPSON tree.

Occupation Printer & Compositor at Sands & McDougalls.
The Sands and McDougalls Directory shows them living at 2 Elm Grove Richmond in 1909, though there is no record of them before then (but the directory sometimes lags). From JS Grierson's memoirs we know that they moved in March 1928 to 9 Fenwick Street Kew (for which they had purchased the block and started building in 1927).

He held a commission in the AMF (Australian Military Forces, otherwise known as the Militia or Reserves).
In addition (dates approximate), he had the following positions:
June 1896 - June 1906, Submarine Mining Company of the Victorian (later Australian) Engineers, highest rank Corporal;
June 1906 - end 1912, Australian Corps of Signallers, highest rank Company Sergeant Major;
1913 - 1923, 52nd Battalion Australian Infantry (which was for a period The Victorian Scottish Regiment), highest rank Lieutenant, commissioned 16 Aug 1915.
He volunteered for the AIF, but was not selected, due (it is surmised) to being in a proscribed industry. He was awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal.

On Sat 5 Aug 1905 there was an advertisement printed in The Argus, Melbourne (page 11, 2nd column from left, Missing Friends, Messages), as follows:
"GEORGE GRIERSON, mother's name Mary Burgess, please communicate with Miss Strawbridge, Pratt and Keith, Aberdeen, Scotland". George was presumably written to because of his earlier return to Scotland, but he was long dead, and this advertisement was noticed by his great-nephew, John (4) Grierson and his wife Margaret. Further descendants do not know the reason for this advertisement but there is a story that some were paid out not to make a claim on some property, which may or may not have been to do with a brewery.

John died 12 Jan 1957 at Fitzroy, Victoria (Vic reg 1078). Ref his death certificate.
Margaret died 18 May (her birthday) 1968 at Kew. Death reg of Margaret Elizabeth Grierson 1968 at Kew, Victoria, dau of Gideon Sampson & Selina Gale, age 92 (ref Vic reg 10820).
Both are buried at Boroondara Cem, Kew (Special A Row A 0030).
