Hurd ~ Fourth Generation

Issue of William Heard and Catharine Gillam
1.   William HEARD
Bap of William Heard 9 Mar 1757 at Countesthorpe, Leicestershire, son of William & Catharine Heard (ref fmp England Births & Baptisms, index incorrectly has Katharine, image is clearly Catharine).

William married, but no details found. William died by 1811 leaving a son; see his mother's Will (ref previous page).

    Child:
  1. William HEARD born after 1777

2.   Thomas HEARD
Occupation Framework Knitter.
Bap of Thomas Heard 14 Jan 1759 at Countesthorpe, Leicestershire, son of William & Katharine [sic] Heard (ref fmp Leicestershire Baptisms image).

Thomas married (between 1779 and 1811 presumably) but not information found. No mention of children in his will.

In his Majesty's Service, alive 1811, also his wife was alive, see his mother Catharine's Will (previous generation). It is very likely that Thomas was engaged in the Napoleonic Wars of 1793 to 1815, as there is a Searjeant Thomas Heard listed in UK Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls (ref Ancestry).
The following battles are mentioned under his entry:
"In the Battle of Fuentes de Oñoro (3–5 May 1811), the British-Portuguese Army under Lord Wellington checked an attempt by the French Army of Portugal under Marshal André Masséna to relieve the besieged city of Almeida.
At the Battle of Vitoria (21 June 1813) a British, Portuguese and Spanish army under General the Marquess of Wellington broke the French army under Joseph Bonaparte and Marshal Jean-Baptiste Jourdan near Vitoria in Spain, eventually leading to victory in the Peninsular War." (ref Wikipedia entries).

Thomas must have returned from His Majesty's Service between 1813 and 1825 and set up as a Frameworkknitter. It appears that he inherited the property from his mother.

Thomas's wife pre-deceased him; she is referred to in Thomas's mother's Will in 1811 but is not mentioned in Thomas's Will of 1825.

On Thomas' death he had the property sold and the proceeds split among his relatives.
Burial of Thos Hurd 25 Sep 1825 at Wigston Magna age 66; Anglican (ref fmp Leicestershire Burials image).
