Mobley ~ Fourth Generation

Issue of Samuel Mobley and Catherine Cleydon
1.   Mary MOBLEY (MABERLY)
Bap 1781 at Headington, Oxfordshire, Mary, dau of Samuel & Catherine Maberley (ref OFHS Records Index).
"February 4. Mary daughter of Samuel Maberly & Catharine (Claydon) his wife" [1781, Headington, St Andrew] (ref Ancestry Oxfordshire CofE Baptisms).

There is a possible marriage for Mary Moblin (which was the name that her younger brother was baptised as in 1802 at Oxford St Giles) on 1 Jun 1801 at Oxford St Giles to William MATTHEWS, sojourner. No census records or further details have been found.

2.   Hannah MOBLEY (MABBERLY)
Bap 1782 at Headington, Oxfordshire, Hannah, dau of Samuel & Catherine Mabberly (ref OFHS Records Index).
"Dec. 8. Hannah dr. of Samuel Mabberly & Catharine (Claydon) his wife" [1782, Headington, St Andrew] (ref Ancestry Oxfordshire CofE Baptisms).

There is a possible marriage for Hannah Mobley, sojourner on 2 Mar 1807 at Oxford St Giles to John COULDREY, sojourner. No census records or further details have been found though there is a possible family in London.

3.   John MOBLEY
Bap 1785 at Elsfield, Oxfordshire, John, son of Saml Mobley (ref OFHS Records Index).
"John son of Saml. Mobley May 14th" [1785, Elsfield] (ref Ancestry Oxfordshire CofE Baptisms).
John was said on the 1851 census to be born at Sescot, which is Sescot Farm at Elsfield, just north of Oxford.

Marriage 19 Dec 1808 at Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire of John Mobley to Ann BARRETT (ref Ancestry Select Marriages and FamilySearch). The record in the St Peter le Bailey, Oxford parish register is "Ann the Daughter of Gorge [sic] and Mary Barret [sic] was brought to church April 12th 1789" (ref Ancestry Oxfordshire CofE Births & Baps image). There is another obscure mark on this entry but it is unclear whether the baptism took place on this date, however I am registering it as such.
Ann's surname is given as BARRATT is on the death certificate of their eldest daughter Mary Ann who married William Tarrant.

My best estimate is that Ann was daughter of George BARRATT (son of John BARRETT, variable spelling, and Susan SWACKLEY) and Mary WHITEAVES (1759-1840, dau of Joseph WHITEHEAVES and Sarah MERRY). This is documented in FamilySearch and the Frederick Shade Family Tree in Ancestry.

From Oxford University and City Herald, Sat 4 May 1816:
"On Monday last our City Sessions were holden before R. Wootten, Esq. Mayor, W.F.Taunton, Esq. Recorder, and other Magistrates; .. W.Stone, an old offender, for stealing linen from Mr. Mobley, butcher, seven years' transportation." (ref British Newsp. Archive)

From Oxford University and City Herald, Sat 21 Feb 1818:
"On Thursday last as some men were driving a cow belonging to Mr. Mobley, butcher, into this city, on Magdalen Bridge it attacked Lady Sewell and Mrs. Page, and in thrusting at the former lady took the shawl from her neck on his horns, and ran most furiously into Merton-fields, attacked and gored a horse belonging to Mr. Taylor, of Long Wall, and it was expected would have done some serious mischief. At length, by throwing a rope round its horns, and driving another cow before it, the animal became more docile, and was conveyed through the city to the place of its destination. - We are happy to hear that Lady Sewell and Mrs. Page, though much alarmed, were not seriously hurt." (ref British Newsp. Archive)

In 1824 John Mobley, Oxford butcher, became bankrupt.
"BANKRUPTS to surrender in BASINGHALL STREET.
John Mobley, late of Oxford, butcher, Oct. 23, at 11, Oct 30, Nov 20 at 12. Attorney, Mr. Miller, Ely place." (ref British Newsp Archive, Public Ledger and Daily Advertiser Mon 11 Oct 1824)

In October 1824, from the London Gazette, referenced by the Edinburgh Gazette No 3271, John was a prisoner for debt:
"BANKRUPTS. From the London Gazette. John Mobley, late of Oxford (but now a prisoner for debt in the King's Bench Prison), butcher, dealer and chapman."

In November 1824 his property at 333 Banbury Road, Oxford, which it is believed by local sources he built in 1823, was advertised for auction:
"FOR SALE. By direction of the Asignees of the Estate and Effects of John Mobley, a Bankrupt.
TO BE SOLD BY AUCTION, By Mr. T. Mallam.
On Wednesday the 24th of November instant, at Four o'clock in the afternoon, at the White Hart Inn, Corn Market, Oxford. - A valuable FREEHOLD DWELLING HOUSE, with stable, slaughter-house, and convenient out-buildings, (recently erected at a great expence), garden, and Close of Land adjoining, situate at Summer Town, new Oxford, late in the occupation of Mr. John Mobley, butcher.
The property adjoins the Banbury turnpike road, and its contiguity to Oxford, and the convenient arrangement of the buildings, afford a very desirable situation for carrying on the trade of a butcher.
For further particulars apply at the Office of Mess. Walsh, solicitors; or to the auctioneer, Oxford." (ref fmp, British Newspapers, Oxford Journal 13 Nov 1824)

This property was later owned by James Ryman, a wealthy publisher, and is currently owned by d'Overbroeck's International College.

In December 1824 John had the last examination of his bankruptcy.
"The Commissioners in a Commission of Bankrupt awarded and issued forth against John Mobley, late of the City of Oxford (but now a prisoner for debt in the King's Bench Prison), Butcher, Dealer and Chapman, intend to meet on the 11th of December instant, at Eleven in the Forenoon, at the Court of Commissioners of Bankrupts, in Bassinghall-Street, in the City of London (by Adjournment from the 20th day of November last), in order to take the Last Examination of the said Bankrupt; when and where he is required to surrender himself, and make a full Discovery and Disclosure of his Estate and Effects, and finish his Examination; and the Creditors, who have not already proved their Debts, are to come prepared to prove the same, and, with those who have already proved their Debts, assent to or dissent from the allowance of his Certificate."     Richard MOBLEY
Born c1797 according to his trial record in 1838 or 1792 according to his death certificate or 1794 according to his marriage.
It is tempting to think that Richard, and John below, are brothers, if the pig offence in 1825 relates to this Richard.
However, they may not have, as John was said to have come from Islip, and Richard from Great Haseley.

Richard Mobley. Date of trial Lent 1824, location of trial Oxfordshire, England, sentence Imprisonment (ref Ancesty England and Wales Criminal Registers).

Richard Mobley. Date of trial Summer 1825; location of trial Oxfordshire, England, sentence Acquittal (ref Ancestry England and Wales Criminal Registers).

"John Goodgame, Richard Mobley, charged with a felony by them committed, in stealing a quantity of lead, of the value of 30s, the property of the Trustees of the Blueberry Charity. - Acquitted." (ref Oxford Journal, Sat 16 July 1825)

Richard Mobley. Date of trial Oct 1825; location of trial Oxfordshire, England, sentence Transportation (ref Ancestry England and Wales Criminal Registers).

"The following prisoners, who were convicted at our last Sessions, and sentenced to be transported for seven years each, have been this week removed from our County Gaol, and put on board the York hulk, at Portsmouth, viz:- John Mobley and Jonathan Tasker Shepherd, for stealing a pig, at Islip, the property of Mr. Peake; Richard Mobley, for receiving the said pig, knowing it to have been stolen; and George Hemming, for shop-lifting at Woodstock." (ref Oxford Journal, Sat 5 Nov 1825)

The outcome for Richard is not known, but John served just over 4 years on the York at Portsmouth before being released.

The next known offence for Richard occurred in 1837.

Richard Mobley, aged 41, born about 1797, date of trial 1 Jan 1838, location of trial Oxfordshire, England, sentence Transportation (ref Ancestry England and Wales Criminal Registers).
Transported for stealing wheat.... Widower 4 ch; Trade Farm Labr; (ref Tasmanian Govt records). There is a mention of Aisley, Oxfordshire, which probably refers to Great Haseley, south east of Oxford..

Richard Mobley, vessel Lord William Bentinck, convicted date 1 Jan 1838, voyage date 11 Apr 1838, Colony Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land), place of conviction Oxford, Oxfordshire, sentence 7 years (ref Ancestry & Findmypast Australian Convict Transportation Registers).

Richard arrived 26 Aug 1838 in Hobart.

Richard Mobley included in list of convicts (incomplete) for 1841, vessel Lord W Bentinck, province Tasmania (ref Ancestry Convict Musters). It is interesting that the convict continues to be associated with the vessel name that he arrived on.

"Tickets-of-Leave have been granted to the under-mentioned convicts, viz.- ... Richard Mobley, ditto [Lord Wm. Bentinck on previous line] .." (ref Trove, Colonial Times Tues 30 Aug 1842)

"The Lieutenant-Governer directs the following list of persons who have received Conditional Pardons, and of which Her Majesty's gracious allowance has been notified, shall be published for general information. The individuals in whose favour the Pardons have been granted will therefore apply at the Office of the Comptroller-General of Convicts, Hobart Town, or if in the Interior, to the Police Magistrate of the District, in order that they may receive the proper documents:- .... Richard Mobley, L.W. Bentinck ..." (ref The Cornwall Chronicle, Launceston Tas, Sat 15 March 1845)

Marriage of Richard Mobley to Sarah WATSON, on 11 July 1853, at Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, registered 1853, registration no 424 (ref Ancestry Australia Marriages).
Marriage of Richard Mobley to Sarah Watson on 11 July 1853 at Hobart, Tasmania; Richard was aged 59, labourer, born 1794; Sarah was aged 49, widow, born 1804 (ref Findmypast Australia Marriages and Tasmania records online). It is very likely that this was Sarah Watson who was formerly married to John Mobley, below; see notes there as to when she arrived at Hobart with 6 children.

Richard died 26 Oct 1855 at Hobart, Tasmania; male, aged 63, Laborer, Phlegm on abscesses (ref Tasmanian Govt Records online, birth marriage death and parish records).

    John MOBLEY
Born about 1801 (ref convict information). His native place (certainly his marriage) was Islip, Oxfordshire.
Received 2 sentences of 7 years transportation, but the first one appears to have been commuted to 4 1/2 years on the Hulk York at Portsmouth.

His first recorded offences was the theft of a sheep, but this was thrown out for lack of evidence.
"John Mobley, charged with having feloniously stolen an ewe sheep, from an inclosed ground at Kidlington, the property of John Smith. - No bill." (ref Oxford Journal Sat 5 March 1825)
"LENT ASSIZES. OXFORD, March 4. A singular circumstance occurred in the criminal court today. John Castell and John Mobley, two labourers, were jointly charged with stealing and killing a sheep, the property of a farmer at Kiddington [sic]. Castell had made a full confession before Mr. Thomas, a magistrate; and as there was no sufficient evidence against his companion, who was considered the instigator, an order was made to take Castell before the grand jury as a witness. When he came into the room, he refused to be sworn, or to tell any thing, and was consequently remanded into custody. A bill was then preferred against both, but thrown out as against Mobley, for want of proof, and found against Castell on his own confession. Upon this confession, amply confirmed by circumstances, he was put on his trial and convicted.
In this case sentence of death was recorded, and an intimation given that the prisoner's life would be spared." (ref Windsor and Eton Express, Sat 12 March 1825)

His second recorded offence was for stealing a pig.

John served 4 years and some more on the York at Plymouth for this offence so this would have been completed early in 1830 unless released earlier.

His third offence was as follows and resulted in 15 months imprisonment.
"John Mobley, charged with having assisted in burning a hay-making machine, the property of William Cleaver, of Banbury. - 15 months' imprisonment." (ref Oxford University and City Herald, Sat 12 March 1831)

Meanwhile John Mobley and Sarah Watson had 7 children (according to a report in 1843), the first few dates possibly being slightly inaccurate due to his imprisonment at Plymouth.
The children were Mary born c1829, Hannah born c1831, Elizabeth born c1833, John born 1835, Grace born 1836, Ann born c1839, Caroline born c1840, Harriett born c1842 (ref 1843 Workhouse record, see below).

John Mobley married Sarah WATSON (presumably the mother of all of his children) at Islip, Oxfordshire on 25 Nov 1833 (ref OFHS). Children John Mobley, bap 16 Aug 1835, son of John & Sarah, at Islip, and Grace Mobley, bap 11 Dec 1836, dau of John & Sarah, at Islip (both ref OFHS and Ancestry England Select Births and Christenings); baptisms not found for any of the other children. Sarah was born about 1802 (based on workhouse information).

The information below shows that John committed an offence in 1837 and disappeared with the family until he was found in 1843; since his wife continued to have his children, presumably they were together somewhere, and managed to avoid the 1841 census.

His fourth offence was as follows and resulted in a sentence of 7 years' transportation to Australia.

"John Mobley, charged with having, on the night of the 16th of November, 1837, stolen from a barn in the parish of Bletchington, a quantity of thrashed wheat in the chaff, the property of Thomas Carter.
Prisoner was convicted in 1829 [seems like 1825 as shown above] of a similar offence, and sentenced to seven years transportation, so that it would appear he had not been long returned when the crime of which he now stood charged was committed. [Though that sentence was carried out at Plymouth and shortened.] When the theft became the subject of conversation, Mobley decamped, and was not, from Nov. 37 till about a month since, seen at Bletchingdon. Although the evidence was circumstantial, the Jury considered it of sufficient weight to bring prisoner in guilty. - 7 years' transportation." (ref British Newspaper Archive, Oxford Chronicle and Reading Gazette, Sat 8 Apr 1843)

"On Monday last John Mobley was removed from our County Gaol to the Warrior hulk at Woolwich, pursuant to his sentence of seven year's transportation." (ref Oxford University and City Herald, Sat 29 Apr 1843)

From 5th July 1843 to 6 July 1843, Sarah and the children were noted for admission and discharge at the Castle Street Workhouse, Westminster, London; perhaps they had come to see John off, if such a thing was possible. Under Sarah's name in the book was noted "belongs to Islip in Oxfordshire, her Husband Transported for seven years". (ref Ancestry, London, England, Workhouse Admission and Discharge Records, Castle Street Workhouse Book, 1842-1844)
Mobbly - Sarah - age 41
Mobbly - Mary - age 14
Mobbly - Hannah - age 12
Mobbly - Elizabeth - age 10
Mobbly - John - age 8
Mobbly - Grace - age 6 1/2
Mobbly - Ann - age 4 1/2

John departed to Australia on 7 Jul 1843.

The summary of information is as follows:

Sarah Mobley and 7 children travelled from London to Australia on the vessel Anglia, arriving on 3 Feb 1850; there were 27 women, 60 children and 1 man in steerage (ref Tasmanian Government records online, no individual names of the children appear online). Sarah and family appear to have avoided being in the 1841 census in England.

Although no death of John Mobley has been found, it appears that Sarah married again, to Richard Mobley above, under her maiden name; the birth year and maiden names match.
Marriage of Richard Mobley to Sarah Watson on 11 July 1853 at Hobart, Tasmania; Richard was aged 59, labourer, born 1794; Sarah was aged 49, widow, born 1804 (ref Findmypast Australia Marriages and Tasmania records online)

Sarah died shortly after, in 1856 in Hobart. Her daughter Ann, discovered above, would have been about 17 at the time.
Name: Mobley, Sarah; Record type: Deaths; Gender: Female; Age: 52; Date of death: 25 Nov 1856; registered: Hobart; Year registered: 1856; Widow; Palpitation of the Heart; Informant Ann Mobley, her mark, daughter, Murray Street (ref Tasmanian Govt records online death certificate).

There are subsequent records (particularly marriages) in Tasmania for many of the children of John and Sarah.
