This seems the most likely identification for Emma, as she did not appear in the 1851 census with her family at Chatham, Kent, where they moved between 1847 and 1849.

There is a previous registration of a William Henry Smith in Jun qtr 1841, mother also James, but it is not known if this is just a common occurrence or whether there was a previous child of this name born to them.

Between 1847 and 1849 the family moved to Chatham, Kent.

William is buried at St Mary's, Chatham with his parents; see gravestone on photo page which does not state his year of birth.

Birth certificate to be checked, possibly 14 Dec 1844 at Eugene Street, Bristol (ref Thomas Burton 2012).
The middle name Jane does not appear in the records until 1891.

Her mother Elizabeth died in March 1861. In the Apr 1861 census, George E Smith was a Nursechild, aged 3m, born Chatham Kent, in the home of Rosalie Woolett (35), a widow.

The marriage was 7 Feb 1862 at the Parish Church in the parish of St Margaret Next Rochester, Kent; both were listed of full age (she was 17); they were bachelor and spinster of St Margarets Bank; he was a General Dealer, son of Patrick Lynch, Dealer; she was dau of James Smith, Shoe Maker; the witnesses were Edward & Mary Ann Barrell (ref the marriage certificate). He was born c1835 at Chatham, Kent, son of Patrick (from Barnstable, Devon) and Sarah (from West Indies), see 1851 census for them.
