Wardle ~ Second Generation

Issue of Thomas Wardle and Jane Bell
1.   Catherine WARDLE
Bap 9 Mar 1684(/85) at Brancepeth, Durham of Catharine Wardail, dau of Thomas Wardail (ref fmp index and FamilySearch P00008-1).
Date of 1684 is written as "original" in FamilySearch and is taken as original in fmp following usual practice there.

Married 6 May 1705 at Brancepeth, Durham of Catherine Wardale to Thomas CORNER (ref FamilySearch M00008-1).
Marr 1705 at Brancepeth, Durham of Catherine Wardale to Thos Corner (ref fmp Boyd's Marriage Index).

Catherine received a legacy from her father Thomas:
The Will of Thomas was as follows. [signed 16 Jun 1728, probate Jul 1728]
.... Item I leave unto my daughter Catharine Corner the sum of ten pounds to be paid her out of my Estate. .... Item I leave more unto my daughter Mary Mitcheson the sum of twenty pounds to to be paid her by my daughter Catharine Corner. Item I leave unto my Grand Child Thomas Corner the sum of ten pounds. Item I leave unto my Grand Child Jane Corner the sum of five pounds. Item I leave unto my Grand Child Elizabeth Corner ye sum of five pounds. Item I leave unto my Grand Child Margret Corner the sum of five pounds to be paid them when they attain to ye years of twenty & one & if any of ye said children shall dye before they come to those years the said money is to be equally divided among ye other children & I order those said legacyes to be paid them by my son John Wardell ...

So evidently Catherine was still alive in 1728. Catherine and Thomas's burials not found. It is possible that the name Thomas was substituted for John in the Will, and similarly Elizabeth for Eleanor.

Some Ancestry Public Trees have subsequent children (Thomasine, Elizabeth, Grace, Benjamin, Thomas) baptised at Saint Margaret, Durham, but it is more likely that these are children of Thomas Corner and Grace Frizell who were married 2 Feb 1720/21 at Saint Margaret.

5.   Thomas WARDLE
Bap 29 May 1692 at Brancepeth, Durham of Thomas Wardail, son of Thomas Wardail (ref FamilySearch P00008-1).

The most likely marriage for Thomas is on 25 Apr 1714 at Houghton-le-Spring, Durham, of Thomas Wardell to Dorothy STOTHERT (ref fmp Northumberland & Durham Marriages). There is a bap 24 Oct 1686 at Houghton Le Spring of Dorithy Stother, daughter of Robert Stother (ref FamilySearch P00047-1) which matches her age at death on the memorial inscription.

Thomas received a legacy from his father Thomas:
The Will of Thomas was as follows. [signed 16 Jun 1728, probate Jul 1728]
.... Item I leave unto my son Thomas Wardell the sum of twenty five pounds.

Dorothy died just prior to Thomas, in the same month; her death date is given as 2 Mar 1743; see date comment below.

On the Memorial Inscription Transcription, Thomas's death date is given as 10 Mar 1743; see date comment below.

In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seale this seventeenth day of March Anno Domino 1742.
Signed Sealed and Delivered in the presence of Cuth Farrow, Wm Farrow.

The memorial Inscription Transcriptions in the parish of Auckland St Andrew lists the following names:
Thomas Wardell 10.3.1743 age 50, wife Dorothy 2.3.1743 age 57; 3 children, Robert 14.8.1743 age 20, Jane 17.11.1723 age 7, Thomas 1725 age 7. It notes that he was husband of Dorothy. (ref fmp, Northumberland and Durham Memorial Inscriptions Transcription).

Date comment: The most definite date in relation to the deaths of Dorothy and Thomas is the date of Probate of Thomas's Will, which is clearly 8 July 1743 on the Will image. Therefore Thomas died some time before this, but after his Will was signed. I think it most likely that the Will was written on 17 Mar 1743, new style, in conformity with current practice. Given his wife Dorothy is not in the Will, it is likely that she had died on 2 Mar 1743 (new style) as in the inscription. In this case the death date for Thomas would be wrong on the inscription (10 Mar 1743) which could be explained by being an error for a later day in March.
