BURGESS This tree is based on the known ancestor of the Grierson family being the same one who was the son of James Burges & Janet Pollick. The evidence found seems to fit this hypothesis. George was known to be a Weaver in Perth at the time of his marriage to Jean MacGrigor. Based on the burial in 1805 at Greyfriars Cemetery, Canal Street Perth PH2 8NN, George was born c1756 and married at 20. These burial records are available online and the 1805 death is the most likely. Based on an analysis of all recorded men of this name at this time in Scotland, the most likely origin of George was as a son of James BURGESS and Janet POLLICK. Other options in Rathven, Kennoway, Falkirk and Kelso have been reviewed and considered unlikely. Birth of George Burges 10 Apr 1756, bap 18 Apr 1756 at Saint John Street Associate Session, Stirling (Non-Conformist) (ref Scotlands People & Ancestry). In Scotlands People this is also registered as St Ninians parish, the parents are James Burges and Janet Pollick, and the witnesses are the grandparents, James Burges Senior and Charles Pollick. St Ninians is 41 miles from Perth. George's father's name is not given in subsequent documentation. Marr 8 July 1776 in Perth, Perth, Scotland to Jean MacGRIGOR, born Scotland, daughter of John MacGRIGOR. (Ref IGI for marriage index, and parish records.) The parish record states 'Jean MacGrigor daughter of John MacGrigor weaver in the Parish of Auchtergaven'. There are several versions of spelling in different documents. In the Old Parish Register 387 Perth Vol. 22, 1776 Perth: "George Burges Weaver in Perth and Jean MacGrigor daughter of John MacGrigor Weaver in the Parish of Auchtergaven both in the Parish of Perth. Elder John Clark. The above persons were regularly proclaimed and married July the eighth day by Mr. Moodie minister at Perth. June the twenty ninth day one thousand seven hundred and seventy six years contracted.” Another version, transcribed by JDG from the Perth parish records at LDS: "Perth June twentyninth day 1776 contracted.George Burges weaver in Perth and Jean McGrigor daughter to John McGrigor weaver in the Parish of Auchtergaven, both in this Parish. Elder John Clark. The above persons were regularly proclaimed and married July the eight day Mr Moodie Minister at Perth." There are large discrepancies in the spelling of Jean's surname. The marriage index has McGRIGOR but the full record has MacGRIGOR. And the births of the children have GRIGOR, MACGRIGOR, GREGOR, McGRIGOR and MacGREGOR. Based on the burial at Greyfriars, she was born c1754 and married at 22. There were several men in Perth at the time identified at George Burges or Burgess and often with the occupation of Weaver.
