4.   William Insull BURMAN
Bap 20 Oct 1814 at Southam, Warwick, England (ref IGI).

William married Sarah SMITH in 1836. "Smith Sarah s.[spinster] = Wm. Insull Burman. b. [bachelor] St Marylebone 1836" (ref Pallot's Marriage Index)
The marriage was 18 Jan 1836 at the District-Rectory of St Mary in the Parish of St Marylebone both were of St Mary St Marylebone; by Banns; witnesses were Geo F Lightfoot & Jane Lightfoot (ref Ancestry London Marriages). Bap of Sarah Smith 9 Mar 1814 at Sevenoaks, Kent, dau of Thomas & Sophia (ref fmp, not c1820 as was claimed later). Her death certificate gives just her mother's name, but the links with Caroline, Charles and Elizabeth Smith show that they were all one family. Elizabeth Smith, her sister, was buried with Sarah and William in Melbourne General Cemetery, see below. William's occupation as Composition Letter Maker matches the occupation of brother-in-law Charles. See FamilySearch for further details.

William's occupation looks like 'Tin Dealer' on Anna Sophia's BC in 1838.
They lived at Beresford Terrace and William was a Clerk at the baptism of Anna Sophia in 1840.

Ref 1841 census. Middlesex, England. Civil Parish of St James Clerkenwell. Address: St Johns Lane, St James Clerkenwell.

In 1846 William was listed in the London Gazette at the Court for Relief of Insolvent Debtors:

In 1848 William appears to have had a position in Kent:
"COUNTY COURT OF KENT, DEAL.
In the matter of the Petition of George Laslett, Farmer, of Hoden, in the parish of Ash, in the County of Kent, an Insolvent Debtor.
... WILLIAM INSULL BURMAN, High Bailiff of the said Court," (ref British Newspapers Kentish Gazette Tues 14 November 1848)

In 1850 there is further mention of financial trouble:
"Burman William Insull. Occupation High Bailiff, Dover. Insolvency. Date of notice 12 Jan 1850." (ref Dover Telegraph online)
This was almost the day of death of their son Alfred John in Dover, Kent.

William, Sarah and children Richard, Anna, Frederick and Emily migrated to USA and approximately 2 years later migrated to Victoria, Australia.
They are not found in the 1851 census which was the 30th March. They had just departed from London on the vessel E and E Perkins which arrived in New York on the 20 April 1851. William was aged 35 in the shipping record (possibly 37), occupation Letter Manufacturer. Sarah was aged 26 in the shipping record (she was at least 31, possibly older).

Occupation: William set up photographic studios in Melbourne and at least two sons, Frederick Charles and Arthur William (later known as Arthur Wellington) and a daughter were connected with Burman's photographic business.

William was a photographic artist of Gertrude street, Fitzroy at the time of the marriage of daughter Emily in 1868.
William was a photographer in Bourke street, Melbourne at the time of the death of daughter Emily in 1879.

William was a photographic artist in Bourke street east, Melbourne, at the time of the death of son Richard in 1885, and living at Robe street, St. Kilda.

The following address is associated with William Burman (ref The Mechanical Eye in Australia):
