William
BYSOUTH Born approximately 1878 (ref 1901 census and newspaper records). Born approximately 1882 (for the death record). No match found for this range of dates. Ref 1901 census (31 Mar 1901). Yorkshire (East riding), England. Civil Parish of Sculcoates. Registration dist of Sculcoates. Address: His Majesty's Prison, Hedon Road Hull. William Bysouth. Prisoner. Single. Age 23. General Labr. Born Stratford, Warwickshire. "THE ONLY CASE. William Bysouth (23), labourer, was indicted charged with breaking and entering a bakehouse at Burstwick with intent to commit a felony. Mr H. S. Cautley, M.P., who prosecuted, said the prosecutor (William Ness) while in bed heard the barking of dogs and the voices of two men. He went downstairs and noticed that the outside doors were open, but did not see any men in the yard. His wife, however, from the bedroom window, saw prisoner leave the bakehouse and go behind a haystack, where he (prisoner) was afterwards found covered with hay. - Prisoner pleaded guilty, and admitted having been previously convicted for felony. - He was found guilty and sentenced to three months' imprisonment." (Hull Daily Mail, Tuesday 9 April 1901) "EASTRIDING POLICE MATTERS. ... A tramp, William Bysouth, was summoned for being found on enclosed premises at Anlaby, on the 21st October. - Defendant was committed to gaol for three months." (ref Hull Daily Mail, Wednesday 23 October 1901) "HEDON PETTY SESSIONS. ... A noted character, Wm. Bysouth, was charged under the Vagrancy Act with loitering at Hedon on the 29th ult., and committed for three months' hard labour." (ref Hull Daily Mail, Thursday 10 July 1902) "A RECORD LAZY MAN. - William Bysouth, who has the reputation of being the laziest man that has ever been in Hedon-road Gaol, was sent to prison for two months for begging. Prisoner had been convicted fourteen times before. The Court Missionary (Mr Melton) described him as a man too lazy to do anything. One occasion he was offered six shillingsworth of food, but prisoner said that he was tired, and it was too far to walk from the gaol to the Police-station to get it." (ref Hull daily Mail, Friday 19 Dec 1902) It is believed by me that the following record is for his death. Death reg of William Bysouth Jun qtr 1939 at Watford dist, Hertfordshire age 57 (ref FreeBMD). Died 13 Apr 1939 at Leavesden Hospital, Watford Rural, Watford R.D. William Bysouth aged 57 years [he would have been 66]. Of Hampstead Workhouse. Labourer. Informant: E.C.Dax, Superintendent, Leavesden Hospital, Watford. (ref Death Cert). Co-incidentally, the informant, Dr Eric Cunningham Dax, was a world-class Psychiatrist who migrated to Australia to hold leading roles in Victorian and Tasmanian mental health. Information about Leavesden Hospital is available on the internet. Among its other duties, the newly formed Metropolitan Asylums Board (MAB) was charged with providing healthcare for 'insane paupers' living in workhouses but unlikely to be harmful or dangerous. Violent patients were sent to the county lunatic asylums. The medical character of patients was that they had a mental handicap. |
