His occupation was listed as company managing director, defence forces personnel (British), diplomat, internee, novelist and trade commissioner. Despite his diplomatic status, he was killed during the second world war on 17 February 1942 at Banka Island, Indonesia. He was survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.	1901 census

Cazaly Dec qtr 1965 at Stepney, Greater London, aged 56 (ref Ancestry death index). Biographical notes supplied by his daughter Margaret Bromley. Born in India, an only child, he was known as "Baba Sahib", in other words, baby boss, by his ayah and other servants. The family returned to England when he was 3 years old, and he was given a good education in a small but respected boys' public school. Although he was expected by his father to become a doctor, it eventuated that he was placed as clerk in a Cazaly family business in France where he boarded with an aunt who taught him to speak the language. When he left that position, his father purchased a "ten pound Pom" ticket to Australia where William took a variety of jobs such as land clearing, riding, and boxing. Returning to England he had a brief and unsuccessful marriage. In World War II he was drafted into the Army where his fluent French was a bonus, plus other practical abilities, and he rose through the ranks. He was a captain when he returned to England via Dunkirk. He met his second long-term partner who was a nurse during the war and they had two daughters. William became very capable in radio and telecommunications and had several positions as a teacher at the RAF Base at Brampton, Huntingdonshire, radio officer on a large passenger ship, and radar and sonar equipment installer on Canberra, the P&O Liner. He was an intellectual man who became rather famous for his letters to the press, stimulating controversial viewpoints and some ire in his readers. An article in the Edmonton Journal (Canada) on 3 Mar 2008 described Bessie as the oldest person in Alberta (Canada) and likely oldest Canadian, having celebrated her 111th birthday. The article gives her birth as March 2, 1897, her father being an actor and her mother a singer, and says that "she was named Bessie for an aunt who was shot to death by a jealous boyfriend as she took her afternoon tea". Attached is an account of the double murder (including her aunt Bessie Montagu Archdeacon, stage name Daisy Montagu) & suicide that took place in the streets of London and was reported in the New York Times on 22 Sep 1893. Bessie's father died when she was young (1904) and her mother put her two brothers in a boarding school and boarded a ship named Lake Manitoba to seek a better life with her daughter in Canada.
