According to his son Richard's obituary, Thomas migrated to South Australia in 1866 in the ship Queen Bee; they went to Wallaroo Mines, where they both found employment until 1877. (Brother Joseph and wife Lavinia also went to Wallaroo Mines.) They selected land near Alford and grew wheat successfully.
