Marr (1) 25 Jul 1765 at Alphington, Devon to Dorothy SAREL (or Sarell); (ref FamilySearch M05017-1 and Alphington records on tape 916799 at LDS). She was bap 14 May 1748 at Alphington, dau of Thomas Sarel or Sarell & Mary (ref FamilySearch C0501701).

Dorothy was buried 14 Nov 1800 at Alphington parish aged 52, "w. of John Chapple" (ref 916799, Alphington records at LDS).

John married (2) 2 Jan 1802 at Saint Petrock, Exeter, Devon to Sarah POLLARD (ref FamilySearch M05050-1). She was born 1761 (ref APT).

4.   James CHAPPLE
Bap 7 Jul 1747 at Alphington, Devon, "son of Clement Chapple or Chappel & Ann (ref FamilySearch C05017-1 and Alphington records on tape 916799 at LDS).
Married 8 Jul 1771 at St Sidwell, Exeter to Elizabeth SOUTHARD (ref APT, not in FamilySearch or fmp). She was probably bap 2 Aug 1750 at Saint Sidwell, Exeter, dau of Mathew Southard (ref FamilySearch C05051-1).

In 1774, Bodmin Gaol was being constructed under Mr. Jones Architect & John Call of Exeter Devon as building supervisor. James was apprenticed under John Call and accompanied him to Bodmin for the construction as an Architect. In 1779, when the Gaol was completed, James was hired as the Gaol Keeper. Following the death of the then Governor, James was appointed Governor of the Gaol, where he served until his death in 1827, for 45 years. In 1827, James Chapple's funeral was presided over by the Chaplain of the Gaol. This information supplied by a descendant, Marg Rosen, in 2012.

James died in Bodmin in 1827. There is a large tombstone in Bodmin Cemetery with the inscription:

Elizabeth was buried 2 Jul 1832 at Bodmin parish aged 84; residence Lower Bodinrell(?); 'Widow of James Snr. Chaplain of the Gaol'; indexed as Elizabeth Chappell in Cornwall OPC database.

The following information is based on a number of Ancestry Public Trees. Many give him the middle name of James.
Bap 6 Jan 1759 at Kenn, Devon as Richard Chaple, son of James Chaple & Anne (ref FamilySearch C05123-1).

The Banns of marriage between Richard Chaple of the parish of St Mary Arches, Exeter, Taylor, and Elizabeth Cuthbertson of the same, spinster were read 23 Apr 1780, 30 Apr 1780 and 7 Mar 1780 (ref fmp Banns image, but the index in fmp has Cuthbert).

Married 8 May 1780 at St Mary Arches, Exeter, Devon to Elizabeth CUTHBERTSON (ref FamilySearch M05099-1).
"Richard Chaple of this Parish Taylor and Elizabeth Cuthbertson of the same spinster were married in this Church by Banns this eighth day of May in the year 1780 by me Ben. Pering Rector. This marriage was solemnized between us, the mark of Richard Chaple, the mark of Elizabeth Cuthbertson, in the presence of John Woollacote, John Bennett" (ref fmp Devon Marriages). A very likely baptism for Elizabeth is 13 Mar 1757 at Exeter St Olave, dau of Francis & Elizabeth Cuthbert note that the image has Cuthbert, not Cuthbertson, but she seems the most likely in Devon.

Note that it is possibly this Richard (as Richard Chappell) who married Elizabeth HECKWORTHY 19 Sep 1805 at Kenn, Devon (ref FamilySearch) as there are no others of that name and approximate birth date and place listed in FamilySearch; however this is not certain. This couple had children baptised - Charlotte bap 16 Jun 1806 at Kenn and died 1807, and William bap 8 Jan 1809 at Kenn (ref FamilySearch).
