"The Bible Christian Church was a Methodist church. It was founded by William O'Bryan, a Wesleyan Methodist local preacher, on 18 October 1815 in North Cornwall.... Primarily concentrated in Cornwall and Devon, the church sent missionaries all over England. By 1820, missions had been established in the Channel Islands and in Kent. ... By 1831, ministers were being sent to Prince Edward Island and Ontario, and a mission was established in Canada in 1845. Many of the emigrants from Devon and Cornwall to Canada and the United States in the 1830s were 'Bible Christians', further encouraging the spread of the church in those countries. ....Members of the Bible Christian Church were sometimes known as Bryanites after their founder. The church made extensive use of female preachers. ... In Canada the Bible Christian Church was amalgamated in 1884 into the Methodist Church of Canada, which later became part of the United Church of Canada." Charles is believed to have migrated to Melbourne, Australia in about 1853 (ref Elizabeth Dunlop). He was granted a license to operate a hackney carriage in the city in 1856 (ref The Argus Tue 29 Jan 1856, Trove).

In 1858, Elizabeth (47) and the children Thomas (18), Elizabeth (16), Mary H. (15) and Harriet H. (14) migrated to Melbourne, Australia as assisted British immigrants on the ship Caractacus (ref Victorian shipping records online).

In 1859 - 1861 Charles was the resident Toll Keeper on the bridge between Church Street, Collingwood, and Studley Park, Kew, over the Yarra River. There are many newspaper articles about this in the Argus (Trove).

On 27 Dec 1855 in The Argus, there is a report of the Collingwood Bridge Company and the project of erecting a bridge across the Yarra at the north end of Church street, Collingwood, across the Yarra to Studley Park, Kew. This was achieved and was operated as a Toll Bridge.

In The Argus 11 May 1859, an inquest upon the body of a Mr Barber which had been found in the Yarra had the testimony of Elizabeth Lightfoot: "My husband, Charles Lightfoot, keeps the Studley Park toll-gate. I remember last Friday evening I was attending to the toll-gate." Also in The Argus of 21 Sep 1859, Charles and Elizabeth were called upon to give evidence in the Court of Criminal Sessions regarding an assault case.

The bridge use was overtaken by the free bridge further up the Yarra from Johnston Street. It fell into disrepair and a report on 21 Apr 1896 in The Argus described Council discussion of its dangers.

FURTHER NOTE

Eliza Serle, daughter of James Serle and granddaughter of Agniss Dunsford, kept a short diary for part of her life, which is in the hands of family members. It contains a mixture of notes on events and financial records. It starts in 1853 when her father and two brothers Fred and Edwin left London for Australia, and ends with some newspaper cuttings. Two of these refer to Charles Lightfoot, whom subsequent discoveries have allowed us to connect to his mother, who was a sister of Agnes/Agniss Dunsford, Eliza's grandmother.

These two cuttings are as follows.
"MARRIAGES. NICOL- LIGHTFOOT. - (Golden Wedding.) - On the 22nd February, 1860, at St Peter's Church, Melbourne, by the Rev. H. H,. P. Handfield, John Nicol, telegraph manager, Daylesford, to Harriet Hancock, youngest daughter of Mr. Charles Lightfoot, Studley Park. Present address, "Lindisfarne," Manning-road, Malvern East."
