There is a record in the England & Wales Criminal Registers, County of Leicester, page 453 (ref Ancestry). Samuel Gale. 1826 Summer Assizes. Crime: Highway Robbery. Sentence: Death. (There are no other Samuel Gales of a suitable age born in Leicestershire so this is quite likely.) "County Gaol. - The following five convicts were removed from this gaol for Woolwich, on Tuesday morning last:- James Elliott, John Beasley, for stealing a cow at Loughborough, Samuel Gale, for robbing a boy in Wigston lane, and Samuel Smith, for stealing five sovereigns at the Red Cow, Hinckley road, for the term of their natural lives; Harriet Collington, for the term of fourteen years." (ref Leicester Chronicle, Sat 26 August 1826). Samuel Gale was one of 146 convicts transported to Australia on the vessel Andromeda, 16 October 1826. Sentence details: Convicted at Leicester Assizes for a term of life on 19 July 1826. Vessel: Andromeda. Date of Departure: 16 October 1826. Place of Arrival: Van Diemen's Land.
