There is a connection with George Frederick Youlton. In the 1871 census, George F. Youlton, Cashier, Devonport Bank, was living with his wife Agnes (nee Agnes Elizabeth Weeks, possibly bap 15 July 1832 at Starcross, Devon (ref IGI) or within 4 years of that, married Sep qtr 1862 at St Thomas, Devon). There were 4 children listed as well as servants and visitors. (Reference information from Angela Copestake, Devon, 2007)

In 1877 George Youlton was the sole executor for the estate of Elizabeth Sophia, Charlotte's mother:

"HODGE Elizabeth Sophia. Effects under £200. 1 June [1877]. The Will of Elizabeth Sophia Hodge formerly of the City of Exeter but late of Devonport in the County of Devon Widow who died 12 April 1877 at 73 Fore-street Devonport was proved at Exeter by George Frederick Youlton of Devonport Bank Manager the sole Executor." (Ref Ancestry National Probate) [This was the address of the Devonport Bank where George Youlton was living in 1871.]

Probate being granted under certain Limitations." (ref Ancestry National Probate).

It has not been possible to confirm the claim that Charlotte was a cousin to George Youlton. There is an old court case document of the Youltons and Rossiters both trying to claim Charlotte's estate in 1883 (ref A. Copestake).

"Starcross - A Gallant Rescue - Cries of distress were heard proceeding from the river late Wednesday night about eleven o'clock. It was a dark, rough night, with the tide running very strong, so that nothing could be made out. However, Mr. Diaper, of the Alexander Hotel, with two others got into a boat, and were speedily followed by Serle, boatman, accompanied by a carpenter, of Kenton, named Potter. Proceeding as well as they could judge in the direction whence the cries came, it was found that a sand barge belonging to S. Stokes had sunk, there being on board at the time S. and W. Stokes, father and son. The father was clinging to the stem of a boat used by them, and was rescued by Mr. Diaper and party; whilst the son, who had climbed the mast, was assisted from his perilous position by boatman Serle. The rescuers were heartily cheered on arrival at the pier." (ref Exeter Flying Post: Wed 25th October 1882, from Chris Kelland)

"Starcross: - Narrow Escape of Four Persons from Deaths by Drowning. - Starcross on Saturday experienced the gale (S. to S.E.) in great force. As the tide flowed so the gale increased, and from five until seven in the evening it was at its height. Long before high water the waves swept over the jetty and on to the railway. The 'Violet', cutter, belonging to Mr. Andrews, Dawlish, broke adrift, and was washed against the railway wall. Attempts were made to save her by some Exmouth boatmen, who, however, eventually gave up the attempt. But a boatman named Serle, of Starcross, at great risk, at last got from the wall on board the cutter, and single-handed succeeded in running her to Topsham. If he had not done so she would have soon become a wreck, as she was bumping heavily against the railway wall. " (ref Western Times: Tues 4th September 1883, from C. Kelland)

The following is an extract from the autobiography of their son Percival.
"My mother thus motherless (due to a accident) at six years of age, was sent to a boarding school in Melbourne and seems to have been kindly treated. Her formal education was probably sketchy, but she read voraciously and acquired much miscellaneous knowledge. She became a good pianist and singer, her voice being quite naturally produced.
My father who was thirteen years older would take her out sometimes to entertainments and was very fond of the clever little girl. She remained at school until she was approaching sixteen, and it would have been a problem to her father what was to become of her. There were few occupations open to girls in those days and all were poorly paid. Marriage was practically the only career really considered desirable, and I have no doubt that marriage to my father was felt to be a very happy solution. There was probably no thought of her attempting to carry her musical education further, and during her twenties and thirties she was bearing and bringing up children, making most of the children's clothes herself, and doing part of the cooking (we always had a general servant). She was an attractive woman. Her features were all possibly a little too large for absolute beauty, but with her bright golden hair and good complexion she was very good-looking. She had a vivid personality, was much interested in people, and fond of music, the theatre, and dancing. She lost a large amount of her sight when she was about fifty, thirty years later she fainted, broke her hip and never walked again, and for about three years before her death at the age of 86 was nearly blind. Yet she was always courageous. One grievance she at times nursed a little. Having married a day after she became sixteen she felt she had never had a girlhood. But the circumstances were exceptional. Her mother was dead, her father often away, and she had no other relations in Australia. After all, she was fortunate in marrying a good man who never lost his affection for her."
