(ref Trove, The Argus Thurs 15 Nov 1877) Marr reg 1901 in Victoria of Alfd Jos Louis Doubleday to Catherine Chard WATSON (Vic reg 3555). She was a daughter of Philip Watson & Isabel Elizabeth Chard, who married in Victoria in 1857 (Vic reg 1306). Her birth was reg 1866 at Ararat, Victoria (Vic reg 19061). Between 1903 and 1907, Alfred's father and stepmother moved to New Zealand. Alfred's trade was "Carriage Builder" in his 1910 enlistment statement. Alfred was an Instructional Staff Warrant Officer Class II, Regimental Number 56897, in the Australian Regular Army by 1918, having served for seven years eight months, with 13 years ten months in the citizen forces before that. He transferred to the AIF for service abroad on 25 April 1918, stating that he was married to Catherine C. (Chard) Doubleday of 527 Barkly St Footscray, with three children. His unit was Special Service, and he was posted to be Staff in Charge of No 3 Draft, Italian Reservists, for the movement to London, and embarked from Sydney on board HMT Gaika on 30 July 1918. He returned to Australia 20 November 1918. He was discharged from the Permanent Forces as a WO Class I on 24 August 1922. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his WWI service. (reference his AIF Attestation Papers).
