L A J Hake. Dau. NM. Age 17. Scholar. Born Suffolk Bury St Edmunds.

Marr reg Sep qtr 1864 at Wandsworth District, London, Lucy Augusta Grizell Hake to Frederick William DUPRÉ (ref FreeBMD). The marriage was 16 Aug 1864 at St Mary, Putney; she was of minor age, spinster, of Putney, Surrey, dau of Thomas Gordon Hake, M.D.; he was a bachelor, of full age, Doctor of Philosophy, of St Pancras Middlesex, son of James Frederick Dupré, Merchant (ref Ancestry London Marriages). From the 1861 census, Frederick was born c1821 in Germany. The Huguenot Dupré family originated in France but fled to Germany at the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (information from Dupre correspondent on Geni tree).

In the 1861 census, Frederick W. Dupré, unm, age 40 [error] , born Germany, was a lecturer in Chemistry and lived with his brothers August (26) and Charles C (15) at 53 Burton Crescent, St Pancras.

However, his age here is incorrect based on family entries in
www.geni.com. This entry contains the following information for Friedrich Wilhelm Dupré:
"Birthdate: 7 Oct 1834. Died 17 Apr 1908. Son of Heinrich Jacob Friedrich Dupré and Jeannette Auguste Florentine Schäfer. Brother of Charlotte Caroline Cornelia Dupré; Caroline Johanne Elisabethe Dupré; Carl Christian Dupré and August Dupré, FRS."

Refer to the National Archives Kew for Naturalisation Papers: Dupré, Frederick William from Hesse Darmstadt. Certficate 3505 issued 30 March 1861. Reference HO 1/100/3505.

It appears that very soon after the marriage, Frederick and Lucy migrated to Stassfurt, Germany for his work as a chemist, as described below.

Excerpt from Thomas Gordon Hake's Memoirs of Eighty Years:
"My son-in-law was Professor of Chemistry at the Westminster, in succession to the gifted Dr. Marcet, whose assistant he had been for some years. He resigned his place, and his brother Augustus Dupre was elected in his stead, while he went to Stassfurt to do chemistry on a larger scale, extricating tens of thousands of tons of potash from its chlorine. He was then the father of a baby, he has now two grown-up daughters and three grown-up sons. I stayed several weeks at Stassfurt. My son Cecil was there under Dupre. He had been a student at the Westminster laboratory; he is now Chief Inspector of Explosives at Melbourne in Victoria.
My daughter was very happy in her domestic life in Stassfurt. She was married from Lady Ripon's house on Putney Heath, where a grand breakfast was provided for a large party of friends. Lady de Grey, Lord Goderich, Colonel Bertie Gordon, Mr. and Mrs. Dupre, my sons, George, Egmont and Henry, Mr. and Mrs. William Hake (my brother and his wife) and other members of my family and friends, with myself, were there, the good countess presiding with her usual kindness and grace. The tables were hung round with festoons of grapes, beneath which the guests were seated.
Every one was struck by the likeness of Mr. Dupre to Bonaparte without any knowledge of the reason, which was that they had a common ancestor in the female line of Feisch, mother of the cardinal of that name. When Mr. Dupre was page to the King of Wurtemberg, Jerome Bonaparte, through this connection, the guard often presented arms as he passed, mistaking him for one of the royal house. He belonged to an old French family, that of Dupre de St. Maur, with the rank of marquis, a title never entirely dropped, and to which my son-in-law now stands next in succession, though he may never use it. There was once an event of moment to the Protestants of France, the revocation of the Edict of Nantes : this drove my son's branch of the Dupres into Germany and another to England, whose descendants are settled in Buckinghamshire."

"MARRIAGES. HAKE-SIMSON.- On the 21st inst., at the Scots Church, Collins-street, by the Rev. Alex. Marshall, M.A., assisted by the Rev. Alex. Adam, M.A., Beaufort, Cecil Napier Hake, son of T. Gordon Hake, M.D., London, to Elizabeth Carstairs, daughter of John Simson, Trawalla, Toorak." (ref Trove, The Argus Melbourne, Thursday 22 March 1894).

"WEDDINGS. HAKE-SIMSON. The marriage of Mr. Cecil Napier Hake, son of T. Gordon Hake, M.D., London, and Miss Elizabeth Carstairs Simson, daughter of Mr. John Simson, of Trawalla, Toorak, was celebrated on Wednesday afternoon, March 21, at the Scots' Church, Collins-street, Melbourne. Owing to the bride's family being in mourning the wedding was private, only the relations of the bride's family being present. The Rev. Alex. Marshall, assisted by the Rev. Alex. Adam, M.A., performed the ceremony. The bride arrived with her father at 2 o'clock, wearing a lovely bridal dress of rich white watered silk, made with picture sleeves, and trimmings of lace. Her long tulle veil was worn with a cluster of orange-blossom. She carried an exquisite bridal bouquet, the gift of the bridegroom. Her only bridesmaid was her sister, Miss Mary Simson, who was picturesquely attired in a gown of cream satin merveilleux trimmed with accordion-plaited chiffon and handsome pearl and iridescent passementerie. A charming touch of colour was given to the costume by an Incroyable hat of cherry-red velvet finished with feathers and bouquet of carnations in a tone darker. Captain White, R.N., commandant of the naval forces of Victoria, acted as the bridegroom-s best man. The church was beautifully decorated with white flowers, tall palms, and ferns." (ref Trove, The Australasian Melbourne, Saturday 24 March 1894)

Note the above comment that the family was in mourning; this may have been due to the death of her aunt by marriage, Catherine née Officer, wife of John Simson's brother Robert, which occurred on the 24 Nov 1893.

"DEATH BY DROWNING.
An inquest was held at the Double Locks Inn, yesterday afternoon, by Mr. Coroner Crosse, on the body of the son of Mr. Edward Hake, organist, St. Sidwell's, and professor of music. The father of the deceased said that on Monday evening he was walking on the banks of the canal with two of his daughters and the deceased, aged about ten, who was behind, and on casually looking back witness saw him falling into the water. He tried to reach him with his stick, but he was beyond reach, and not being able to swim, witness went to the other side of the canal and got into a boat and went as quckly as possible to where deceased had fallen in, but meanwhile the boy had disappeared, and witness saw no more of him. Could in no way account for the accident, except that the lad might have been watching a water rat. He was in very good spirits only two minutes before. There was a gentleman in a canoe near, and he called to him, but he replied in effect that he was powerless to render assistance. Two young men who had been bathing in the river on the other side, hearing cries, had come up and got into the canal, but they could not dive, and therefore could render no material help, although he was thankful for what they did. A juryman said he thought the person in charge of the canoe was blameworthy, because persons who go in canoes are generally expert swimmers. The Coroner said he could not see how the person in question could be blamed. The deceased's own father did not venture to go into the water to save him, how, therefore, could a stranger be expected to do so? Whether the young man could or could not save the boy must be left to his own conscience - they had no evidence that he could swim. If he (the coroner) knew that he was an expert swimmer, then, perhaps, he would be blameworthy. - Amy Hake, sister of the deceased, gave corroborative evidence. - Charles Rowe, labourer, of Alphington, and others searched for the body the same night, and resumed the search the next morning, when the deceased was recovered and taken to the inn at the Double Locks. This being all the evidence, the jury immediately returned a verdict of 'Accidental Death'." (ref British Newspapers, Western Times, Thurs 24 July 1873)

7.   Elsie Frederica HAKE

Occ Watercolour Artist; see 'Encyclopaedia of Australian Art'.
Elsie was a founder of the Castlemaine Art Gallery.

Marr 1901 in Victoria of Elsie Frederica Hake to Arthur BARLOW in Victoria (Vic reg 6488/1901).
"MARRIAGES. BARLOW - HAKE.- On the 2nd October, at Holy Trinity Church, Kew, by the Rev Canon Hindley, Arthur, eldest son of the late W. H. Barlow, of "Highfield," Kew, to Elsie Frederica, daughter of Sidney Hake, Princess street, Kew." (ref Trove, The Australasian (Melb), Sat 16 Nov 1901)

Arthur was previously married in 1880 to Mary Margaret SMART in Victoria (Vic reg 994/1880); she was daughter of Archibald Smart & Mary Holmes, born 18545, and died in 1900 at Brighton (Vic reg 4734/1900). Article in Trove 1906 (unknown author):
"Yesterday I visited Fink's Buildings, where Mrs. Arthur Barlow (by special request) is holding a private view of her sketches - some 58 in all. The watercolours are vivid, artistic, with soft and pleasing atmosphere. They are such absolute sketches, quickly painted, that one must not look too closely at what, at a little distance, gives lovely colouring and charming effect. In oils there is a very find study of red geraniums. There is a good portrait of "Baby Barlow". Mrs. Barlow has sold quite a number of her sketches. She has made great strides since, when Miss Elsie Hake, a student at the National Gallery, her pictures always attracted favourable notice." (ref Trove, Australian Town and Country Journal, Sydney, Wed 26 Dec 1906)

Article in Trove 1916:
"Australian Art. Through Messrs. F.R. Barlow and Sons, Mr. Arthur Barlow, retired police magistrate, and formerly judge's associate of Victoria, is publishing a souvenir of sketches in pen and ink by his wife, under the title of "Australia's Message." Mrs. Barlow, formerly Miss Elsie Hake, is well known for her artistic work, "The Gum Trees of Australia." "Australia's Message," which will appear this week, consists of sketches that breathe the very fragrance of the Australian bush. The kookaburra, the bush hut, the old whim, the horse team, the magpie, and the wild flowers will bring before our Australian soldiers abroad much of Australia that we love. The frontispiece consists of Australian blossoms and naval flags." (ref Trove, The Bendigo Independent, Vic, Mon 7 Aug 1916)

At various times they lived in Maryborough and Castlemaine.

Death reg 1917 of Arthur Barlow at Cheltenham, Victoria, son of Wm Hy Barlow & Carol Wrigley, age 62 (Ancestry Vic reg 4319).
"At his private residence, "St. Ives," Milan-street, Mentone, the death occurred on Sunday of Mr. Arthur Barlow, late police magistrate, at the age of 63 years. The late Mr. Barlow formerly occupied the position of judge's associate for some years before he was promoted to the magistracy. He retired some years ago, and latterly had been living privately at Mentone." (ref Trove, The Age Melbourne, Tue 26 Jun 1917)

"Mr. Arthur Barlow, who was police magistrate in this and other district up till two years ago, died at Mentone on Sunday last, aged 62. A widow and young family remain; deceased was married twice." (ref The Bendigo Independent, Wed 27 Jun 1917)

Elsie died 15 Nov 1948 at Mentone, Victoria (Vic reg 12969).
"OBITUARY. Mrs Elsie Barlow, the well-known artist, died last Monday at a Mentone private hospital after a long illness. She held several water-colour exhibitions before her health began to fail about five years ago. Her husband died in 1917, and she is survived by her son and daughter. The funeral was at Springvale Crematorium on Wednesday." (ref Trove, The Argus Melbourne, Sat 20 Nov 1948)
"Mrs Elsie F. Barlow, who died at Mentone this week, was formerly a well-known water color artist, and was leader of the movement which resulted in the founding of the Castlemaine art gallery. After studying art at the National Gallery under the late Bernard Hall, she married Mr. A. Barlow, a police magistrate at Maryborough and Castlemaine. After the death of her husband in 1917, Mrs. Barlow held several successful exhibitions of her water colors in Melbourne." (ref Trove, The Age Melbourne, Sat 20 Nov 1948)
