"Hake was granted the rank of Acting Sublieutenant with a date of seniority of 25 January, 1911.   His seagoing life in civilian service placed him in good standing as a naval reservist, with work in S.S. ChirripoBarranca, and Chagres of the Elders & Fyffes company, culminating in first mate ranks and even Chief Officer in Barranca by 1913. On 14 September, 1914, Hake was appointed to the armed merchant cruiser Edinburgh Castle as Acting Lieutenant, boarding the ship that same day. By July, 1915, he was acting as the ship's navigating officer. On 20 February, 1916, Hake piloted the S.S. Photinia to Stanley Harbour. Hake was promoted to the rank of   Lieutenant   R.N.R.   on 2 March, 1916 with a date of seniority of 2 August, 1915. On 12 March, 1918 he was discharged from Edinburgh Castle to the armed merchant cruiser Kildonan Castle for passage. On 14 May, 1918, he was appointed the temporary navigating officer in Tyne during the absence of Lieutenant, R.N.R. George Brooks, starting service on the 19th. This appointment ended on 17 June. Hake was appointed in command of the destroyer Fame on 19 August, 1918."

In 1918 Walter Conway travelled to Hong Kong via New York. He was 29 years 11 months, R.N.R., his past permanent residence Wells, nearest relative Mr G.E. Hake, Wells, Norfolk (ref Ancestry New York Passenger Lists).

"Hake was demobilised on 31 May, 1920." (ref Dreadnought website above)

He is believed by family information to have been Harbour Master at Hong Kong, but this is uncertain. However he did have a position in Hong Kong. See the website

"In Hong Kong’s Marine Court on the 28 October 1921, the Magistrate, Lieutenant Conway Hake RNR gave his judgement in the case in which John Walter Edward Drake, Junior Engineer Officer of RFA Pearleaf was charged at the instance of the Master, Alfred S Leech RFA with absenting himself without leave from his duty in the engine room or stokehold at 1am on 16 October 1921 under the Transport Discipline Regulations".

In 1941 Walter Conway was the executor for his mother:
"HAKE Philippa Egmond of Leyland Cottage Holkham-road Wells widow died 24 August 1941. Probate Norwich 1 October to Conway Hake [son] retired commander R.N. Effects £491 8s. 7d." (Ancestry Probate records)

Walter Hake also served in World War II.
"Hake was called up in October, 1941 for plotting duties with "O.T.D.". In May, 1942, he was appointed to H.M.S. Orlando  in Greenock as Assistant Admiralty Berthing Officer with the rank of Acting Commander. He remained in the post until January, 1945. He was retired on 20 August, 1946 with the War Service rank of Commander  R.N.R." (ref Dreadnought website above)

Her birth was 15 Dec 1905 (ref Ancestry Death Index). She was a dau of Richard Edward Darnley and Mary Hannah Wood (ref familytree.dearnley.com for members of the Dearnley and Darnley families). "Sir Henry Hake, Director of the National Portrait Gallery since 1927, died at his home in London early yesterday morning. He was 59 years old. Henry Mendelssohn Hake, son of the late Henry Wilson Hake, Ph.D., and a grandson of Thomas Gordon Hake, physician, poet, and friend of D.G.Rossetti, George Borrow, and others, was born in London in 1892. He was educated at Westminster and Trinity College, Cambridge, and in 1914 became an assistant in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. From 1915 to 1919 he served in the army, and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. Returning to the British Museum he remained there until his appointment in 1927 as Director, Keeper and Secretary of the National Portrait Gallery ..."

Jane Patricia died 27 Apr 1982 age 89 (ref an obituary notice in The Times for Jane Patricia Lady (Robertson) Hake).
