Shuttleworth ~ Second Generation

Issue of John Shuttleworth and Dorothy Firbank
1.   Amelia SHUTTLEWORTH
PRESUMED TO FIT HERE.
Bap 1 Sep 1773 at Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, dau of John Shuttleworth (ref Ancestry England Select Births and Christenings).

If here, she must have died by 1807, as Anna is referred to as John's second daughter, in her marriage.
No further information found.

2.   Mary Ann SHUTTLEWORTH
PRESUMED TO FIT HERE.

Bap 24 Nov 1774 at Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, dau of John Shuttleworth (ref Ancestry England Select Births and Christenings).

If here, she must have died by 1807, as Anna is referred to as John's second daughter, in her marriage. Also, since Mary Matilda was born in 1785, presumably Mary Ann had died by then.
No further information found.

3.   Caroline SHUTTLEWORTH
Bap 2 Jan 1777 at Saint Mary, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, dau of John Shuttleworth (ref Ancestry England Select Births and Christenings).
This is the only Caroline Shuttleworth found baptised in this timeframe.
Caroline presumably went with her family to Denmark and then returned to England.

Marriage on 22 Aug 1805 at St Anne Limehouse of Edward TOMES of the Parish of Southam in the County of Warwick a Widower and Caroline Shuttleworth of this Parish Spinster, by Licence, witnesses John Shuttleworth, Anna Shuttleworth, John Shuttleworth Junr, Matilda Shuttleworth (ref Ancestry London Marriages).

"MARRIED. Edward Tomes, esq; of Southam, Warwickshire, to Miss Shuttleworth, daughter of John Shuttleworth, esq; of London." (ref British Newspaper Archive, Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette, Thurs 5 Sep 1805"

Note that her mother Dorothy was buried in that parish (St Anne Limehouse) in 1828. Both Edward, and Richard Burman, who married Caroline's sister Anna, came from Southam, Warwickshire, so perhaps it was through that connection that Anna met Richard?

Caroline's death or burial not found and no children found for Caroline and Edward. Caroline not found in 1841 census.

Edward was born 16 Sep 1771, bap 7 Oct 1771 at Southam, Warwickshire, Edward, son of John & Jane Tomes (ref Ancestry Warwickshire England Baps Marr & Burials image).

Edward Tomes had previously been married to Mary Susannah COTTON.
Marriage on 27 Jan 1799 at Saint Mary, Warwick, Warwickshire of Edward Tomes, Batchelor, of the Parish of Southam, Gentn., in this County, and Mary Susannah Cotton of this Parish Spinster, by License, witnesses Joseph Cotton, Charlotte Lee (ref Ancestry Warwickshire Marriages image).

A daughter, Mary Susannah Tomes, was buried 24 Jun 1800 at St Mary, Warwick: "June 24 Mary Susannah Tomes dau of Mr Edwd. Tomes" (ref Ancestry Warwickshire England Baps Marr & Burials image).

They had another daughter, Mary who was baptised in 1802 just before her mother died: "Mary Daughter of Edward and Mary Susanna Tomes May ye 30th [1803]. She was previously Baptized April 28th 1802" (ref Ancestry Warwickshire England Baps Marr & Burials image). Mary married Henry Thomas CHAMBERLAYNE on 6 Dec 1824 at Southam, Warwickshire (ref FamilySearch), and see Edward's probate.

Edward's first wife Mary Susannah was buried 21 Jun 1802 at St Mary, Warwick: "June 21. Mrs Mary Susannah Tomes Wife of Mr. Edwd. Tomes of Southam" (ref Ancestry Warwickshire England Baps Marr & Burials image).

Edward died 8 Apr 1837. There was a late probate notice in 1872.
"TOMES Edward Esq. Effects under £800. 18 June [1872]. Administration (with the Will) of the effects of Edward Tomes late of Southam in the County of Warwick Esquire who died 8 April 1837 at Southam left unadministered by Mary Chamberlayne (Wife of Henry Thomas Chamberlayne, Esquire) the Daughter the Legatee for Life as to a Moiety of the Residue was granted at the Principal Registry to William Tankerville Chamberlayne of Stoneythorpe in the said County Esquire the Grandson one of the Residuary Legatees. William died in 1804 at Calcutta, India:

When he was 18 he was forceably held for 2 days in a case of mistaken identity:
"On the 6th instant [November 1798], Mr. George Edmund Shuttleworth, son of Mr. Shuttleworth, of Sun Tavern-fields, was forcibly seized by two men in Back-lane, St. George's in the East, who having blindfolded and gagged him, dragged him to a place called Botany-Bay, near the New Road, where they forced him into a hackney coach, and conveyed him, it is supposed, to some place near Chick-lane, where they confined him 48 hours without any sustenance, except a small piece of bread, and taking from him all his money, (except 3s.) they conveyed him through several windings into West Smithfield, where they disengaged him, saying he might go and be d-----d, for he was not the person they wanted." (ref BNA, Reading Mercury, Mon 19 Nov 1798)

In 1802 George was admitted to the Freedom of the City of London in the company of Skinners (ref the subsequent admittance of two of his sons, Mark and Fauconberg, in 1828 and 1848 respectively) (ref Ancestry).

Ann was born c1785 and the most likely birth and baptism is that of Ann, dau of John & Dorothy Thompson of Long Alley, born Dec 31st [1784], bap 23 inst [Jan 1785] at St Leonard, Shoreditch; Long Alley was at Lower Shadwell and this matches the 1851 census information.
