Introduction
Southon ~ First Generation

  James SOUTHON

James was born c1776 (ref his DC). His origins are unproved, but he was very likely a son of James SOUTHON and Ann HOLLAND, bap 5 Jun 1776 at Tortington, Sussex (ref FamilySearch); they had married 16 Jul 1775 at Tortington. The marriage image is available in FamilySearch in the Tortington parish register: "James Southon of this Parish and Ann Holland, of the Parish of Horsham, were married in this Church by License, this sixteenth day of July in the year of Our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and twenty five by me John Carr Curate. This marriage was solemnized between us, James Southon, Ann Holland (both signed) in the presence of Joseph Harvey, Robert Legatt." There are two subsequent baptisms which may be siblings of James: Mary SOWTON, bap 11 Jun 1780 at Tortington, dau of James & Anne; and Thomas SOWTON, bap 15 Oct 1782 at Tortington, son of James & Anne. There are no other marriages of a similar James and Ann in Sussex around this time.

Occupation: Tin Plate Worker (ref his DC); Tinsmith (from DC of his daughter Mary).

Married 28 Jan 1805 at Saint Mary-St Marylebone Road, Saint Marylebone, London to Hannah SUMMERSETT; they were bachelor and spinster of the parish, and the witnesses were Robert Trotter (her brother-in-law) and Susannah Summersett (her sister) (ref Ancestry London marriages).

Circumstantial evidence is that Hannah was a daughter of Dalton SOMMERSET (from Sudbury, Suffolk) and Hannah MAYHEW, who married in 1781 at Westminster. Other children included Martha, who married Robert Trotter, and Susanna. Hannah's baptism has not been found and the family were probably non-conformist; she was probably born c1784 (ref 1861 census). SEE THE SOMMERSET TREE FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
