The marriage was 30 Oct 1837 at the parish of St Giles with St Mary, Oxford; Richard was full age, Widower, Baker, residence Pheasant Inn, St Giles, son of Robert Cave, Sawyer; Hannah was full age, spinster, residence Great Coxwell, Berkshire, dau of William Gillett, Blacksmith; witnesses William Belcher, Ann Cotton (ref Ancestry Oxfordshire CofE Marriages). Legally speaking, this marriage was prohibited under the 1835 Marriage Act, marriage to deceased wife's sister, though it would have been legal if taken abroad. The law was not changed until 1907. This would account for the comment in her Probate record naming her as Cave otherwise Gillett, spinster.

"An inquest was held on Wednesday last in St. Ebbe's parish on the body of William Tarrant, aged fifty-five, tailor, who died from an accident he had received very early the previous Sunday morning. It appeared from the evidence of the daughter of the deceased that she heard him come up to her bedroom about eleven o'clock on Saturday night. He said he wanted a light. Her rushlight was gone out. Afterwards she heard her father fall down stairs, where he was found lying. She then sent for Mr. Thompson, surgeon, whose assistant deposed that death was caused by fracture of the base of the skull from a fall. "Inquests before Wm. Brunner, Esq. At the Friars' public house, Friars'-street, on Wednesday, on the body of William Tarrant, tailor, aged 55. According to shipping records, William and Mary Ann and their children William, Joseph and Thirza arrived in Victoria, Australia on 2 September 1857 by assisted passage on the "Hornet". "Own a/c (no employer). Address Ballarat. Date of agreement 5 September. Annual amount 55 pounds, terms 3 months with rations." William's age 44 and Mary's age 46 agrees with census.

William was living at Drummond St, Ballarat in 1863 (marriage of his daughter Mary Ann in Ballarat).

William moved to NSW in 1884, 6 months before his death, and died 28 Oct 1884 at 475 Crown St, Sydney. The informant was his son Joseph. He was buried at the Necropolis. (Ref his Death Cert held by LS for all details.) This certificate lists 5 living children and 4 dead being 2 male, 2 female.
"DEATHS. TARRANT. - October 28, at his residence, 475, Crown-street, Surry Hills, William Tarrant, late of Ballarat, Victoria, aged 73 years." (ref Trove, Sydney Morning Herald, Wed 29 Oct 1884)

Mary Ann died on 18 Oct 1893 at Kensington Road, Summerhill, New South Wales. They migrated to Victoria, Australia c1855 (ref DC). Not found in Victorian shipping records. It is possible that he was the "Josiah Tarrant" who was a witness to the marriage of his brother Benjamin in 1855 in Buninyong.

Joseph died 27th June 1889 at Surrey Hills, Victoria (Vic reg 6225) (ref his Death Certificate). He was buried at Boroondara Cem, Kew.
"We regret to report that Mr J.E. Tarrant formerly of this Journal, whose serious illness we noted in a recent issue, died yesterday morning. The cause of death was cancer." (Ref Clunes Guardian And Gazette Jun 28 1889). Joseph and Caroline had lived at Clunes for many years before moving to Melbourne, his work being journalism.

Caroline died 1915 at Camberwell, Victoria (Vic reg 8132).

Some members of the Tarrant family travelled to New Zealand in 1875 on the 'Alhambra'. Those listed are Mrs Tarrant (47) [perhaps Mary Ann but the age is wrong], Eliza (17) [perhaps Esther], James (16), Kate (13) [perhaps Clara Kate], Jane (10), Ben (8), Charles (3).

Benjamin died 28 Jul 1882 at Palmerston North, Manawatu, New Zealand. The death is registered in 1882 of Benjamin aged 42 years [does not match] (NZ reg 3561).

Mary Ann returned to Australia and died 15 Jan 1924 at Woollahra NSW.

Death reg of Carol[ine] Tarrant 1901 at "Spol", dau of Jno Walker & Carol (Unknown), age 70 (Vic reg 15441). Ancestry suggests this is Spotswood, Victoria. Daughter Alice Mary was living in that area at the time and it may have been at her house.
"The funeral of the late Mrs. Tarrant, wife of Mr Isaac Tarrant, of Skipton street, took place on Friday and was largely attended. The pall-bearers were Messrs H.Baxter, O.Collett, W.Foley, F.Plumridge, T.White, S.Lukies, E.Jermyn, and J.Ditchfield; and the coffin-bearers were Messrs J.Braybrook, J.Nall, M.Garvey, and J.Davies. His parents are William Tarrant and Ann Evans, and his father's profession Cordwainer (ref their Marriage Cert). A notice in The Argus of Sat 15 Jul 1911 regarding their Golden Wedding gives the date of 7 July 1861.

Amelia was the daughter of "Saml Poole and Eliza Costin Charl H" and was born c1843 according to her death record. The IGI has a record of the marriage of Samuel POOK to Eliza Couston HEATH on 18 Dec 1836 at Saint Giles, Camberwell, Surrey, England. Amelia's birth was registered Jun qtr 1843 at Greenwich. Samuel Pook (age 42), Eliza (age 39), a child Eliza (age 14) and Amelia (age 9) arrived in Victoria, Australia in July 1853 by assisted passage on the "Elizabeth".
