Ref The Argus 10 Aug 1874: "GRIERSON - BURTON. - On the 30th ult., at St Stephen's Church, Richmond, by the Rev. C.T.Perks, John Grierson, of Burnley street, to Annie Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Thomas Burton, of 182 Bridge road." (The 8 is obscure.) Annie died 18 Oct 1888 at Richmond, Victoria aged 34 (Vic reg 15403), buried at Boroondara Cem, Kew, CofE C 1282 with her parents and brother Albert and niece Ellen. "GRIERSON. - On the 18th inst., at her residence, Church street, South Richmond, Annie Elizabeth, the dearly loved wife of John Grierson, and eldest daughter of the late Thomas Burton, formerly of Bridge-road, Richmond, aged 34 years. So loved, so mourned." (The Argus Fri 19 Oct 1888, Trove) The memorial is as follows: 'In loving remembrance of THOMAS JAMES BURTON, late of Richmond died 19th April 1884 - Aged 56 years. Also - his wife ELIZABETH (nee SMITH) BURTON who died at Auburn 31st July 1904 - Aged 64 years "noble hearted always." She was born 19 May 1852 at 15 Clarendon St, Somers Town, London, dau of Charles de Groot (born c1817 Sussex, son of John or Joannes De Groot of Amersfoort Netherlands and Dinah Soames of Hitchin Hertfordshire) & Sarah Harriet Read (born 10 May 1819 in Pancras, Middlesex, dau of Austin Read & Sarah Cockerell) (ref Thomas Burton 2013). Her birth reg Sep qtr 1852 at Pancras dist as Mary Helen De Groot (ref FreeBMD). Ref The Argus 27 Sep 1876 :"BURTON - DE GROOT - On the 14th inst, at St Jude's, Carlton, by the Rev H Rodda, Thomas James, eldest son of Thomas Burton of Richmond, to Mary Ellen, fourth daughter of Charles de Groot, of Carlton, late of London." There appears to be no near connection with Captain Francis Edward De Groot who cut the ribbon at the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932; he was born and died in Dublin, of Dutch Huguenot descent (ref Australian Dictionary of Biography online for his life story). In 1877 at the birth of son Thomas they were living at Vine-cottage, Brighton-street, Richmond. Thomas died 10 Jan 1903 at Richmond, Victoria (Vic reg 3290), buried at Boroondara Cem. "BURTON.- On the 10th January, at his residence, 588 Church-street, South Richmond, Thomas James, the dearly beloved husband of Mary Ellen Burton, eldest son of the late Thomas Burton, late of Bridge-road, Richmond, in his 48th year. A patient sufferer gone to rest." (ref Trove, The Argus, Mon 12th Jan 1903) Death reg of Mary E. Burton in 1918 at Rockdale, New South Wales, dau of Charles and Sarah (NSW reg 5408). Their son George was living in Rockdale in 1912 and later."DEATHS. BURTON. - On the 11th April, at Sydney, Mary Ellen, relict of the late Thomas James Burton, ? Willis street, Malvern, aged 66 years." "IN MEMORIUM. BURTON.- The Friends of the late Mrs. MARY ELLEN BURTON are informed that her remains will be interred in Boroondata Cemetery, Kew." Bennett, died 1920 at Brighton, Victoria); Ada (born 1851, died unmarried 1876 in Melbourne) so evidently the whole family migrated to Victoria though the shipping record has not been found. They were living at Swan Street Richmond in November 1877. Mary Ann died 1891 at Hawthorn, Victoria (Vic reg 1994). Alfred remarried in 1891 to Amy WATSON (1868-1967) and had 2 more children, before dying in 1934 in New Zealand. |
