5.   Thomas BYSOUTH
Birth reg of Thomas Bysouth Mar qtr 1843 at Royston dist, mother's name Rumbold (ref GRO Index).

Born 3 Jan 1843 at Field Cottage, Barley, Thomas, son of Mary Bysouth formerly Rumbold; there is no father's name (ref Birth Cert). (In 1841, Mary Bysouth was living with Thomas Rumbold (60), presumably her father, and her children Susan, Joseph, Mary and James at Wilkerson Farm, Barley, and since there is no Field Cottage listed in Barley in 1841, it is most likely that this is the same family. However it is possible that Thomas was not the son of James, as James was not present in 1841 and it is strange that he is not listed on the BC.)

Thomas has listed his father as James South, deceased, on his marriage certificate, but since he is very inaccurate about his birthplace in successive census records, he may have been inaccurate about this.

David died 1 Sep 1931. Death reg of David Campbell 1931 in New Zealand (NZ Reg 1931/8921).
"OBITUARY. Rev. David Campbell. It was with the greatest regret that his many friends learned of the death at Dunedin on Tuesday, at the age of 56 years. of the Rev. David Campbell, who, until June last, occupied the position of minister of the Presbyterian Church at West Taieri. Mr Campbell arrived in New Zealand from the Old Country at an early age, and was brought up at Green Island as a Primitive Methodist, but he joined the Presbyterian Church about 20 years ago. His ministry at West Taieri, which lasted for seven years, was marked by harmonious and conscientious service to the church. He was particularly popular with the younger members of the congregation, for whose welfare he was a zealous and unceasing worker, and the results he achieved in that direction remain a lasting tribute to his loyalty and devotion to the interests of the young people. Before taking charge at West Taieri Mr Campbell conducted a ministry in the Wanganui district, where he was highly respected by those who were privileged to make his acquaintance. His illness lasted for about 18 months, and it was on that account that he was forced to relinquish his duties at West Taieri. His resignation was accepted with deep regret by the Dunedin Presbytery, and a resolution regarding his faithful ministry was placed on record. He is survived by Mrs Campbell and a family of three sons and two daughters. On son, the Rev. Thomas Campbell, is the Presbyterian minister at Nightcaps, to which charge he was inducted last November, after carrying on his father's work at West Taieri for some time." "OBITUARY. Mr. H.J. WOODHOUSE. Mr Herbert James Woodhouse, who died on Thursday at the age of 82 years, was a well-known painter of racehorses. Lithographs from his water-colours are still found in many clubs. He was born in Essex in 1854, and was brought to Australia three years later by his father, the late Mr Frederick Woodhouse, who was also widely known as a painter of racehorses. Mr Woodhouse senior painted the winner of every Melbourne Cup from 1861-88. Another son was W. J. Woodhouse, who was cartoonist of Adelaide "Punch" from 1878 to 1884. Mr H. J. Woodhouse made many lithographs and woodcuts. He was buried at the Eastern Cemetery, Geelong, yesterday." (ref Trove, The Argus Melb, Sat 12 Jun 1937)

Died 25 Mar 1862, age 12 (Vic reg 01375).

"The Argus" Thurs. March 27th, 1862:
"The district coroner held an inquest yesterday, at Moonee Ponds, on the bodies of two boys, named William and James Bysouth, who were found drowned in the Moonee Ponds Creek, on the 25th inst. The boys were the sons of a coachman (?), named William Bysouth, and had gone out fishing together on Monday last. The fishing-rod and cap of the deceased William Bysouth were found in the creek by his father. As the youths did not return in the evening, a search was made for them by the father and some of his acquaintances, but without success. Information was then given to the police at Flemington, and Senior constable James dragged the creek, and recovered the body of the boy James, the elder of the two, close under the bank where the fishing-rod was found. The constable then dived into a deep hole in the creek, and recovered the other body, about five yards from the spot where his brother lay. There were no signs of struggling on the bank, nor any marks of violence on the bodies of the deceased, who were in the habit of going out fishing together. The constable was of the opinion that, as both were fully dressed, one had fallen into the water, and dragged the other with him. The jury returned a verdict of "Found drowned."

Mentioned (deceased) in his father's death certificate. The brothers were buried at Melbourne General Cemetery with the inscription "Erected by the pupils of the Moonee Ponds School to the memory of their beloved schoolmates James Bysouth aged 12 years and William aged 9 years who were both accidentally drowned whilst fishing in the Moonee Ponds Creek 24th March 1862. The elder met his death while nobly striving to save his younger brother." (ref
