Death reg of George Martin Diamond 1865 in New Zealand (NZ reg 1865/3800).
"A serious accident (says the Canterbury Press) occurred on the Sumner road, on the evening of the 12th inst. As Cobb and Co's coach was coming in from Christchurch, arid had just past the Look-out station, near the rifle range, something gave way belonging to the drag at which the horses were startled and the vehicle was capsized. Mr. George Diamond we fear is injured beyond hope of recovery, having, in trying to jump out, fallen on to his head. He was surrounded by a pool of blood when picked up. Mr. Raphael, of the Canterbury Hotel, has also received very serious injuries, as well as Mr. Edward Hargreaves while several other gentlemen have received slight injuries. We may consider it fortunate that the coach capsized inwards instead of outwards, otherwise there would have been little chance for any of the passengers to escape. We believe no blame whatever is attached to the driver. [Mr. Diamond has since died and an inquest held on the body. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.]" (ref NZ papers past, Evening Post, Issue 192, 19 September 1865, Page 3)

"DEATH. DIAMOND - On April 20th, at his residence, 24, Sydney street, Wellington, Sydney Diamond, in his 80th year." (ref NZ papers past, New Zealand Times, 21 Apr 1914)
"AN OLD RESIDENT'S DEATH. MR. SYDNEY DIAMOND. Another of Wellington's early pioneers - Mr. Sydney Diamond - died at his residence, Sydney-street, early this morning. The deceased, who was 80 years of age, was one of a numerous family who arrived in Port Nicholson on the 22nd May, 1841, by the ship William Bentinck (Captain Crowe), having left the Old Country on the 5th of January of the same year. In 1852 he, with his brothers, left for the Victorian goldfields, where they put in six years, five of which were spent in Ballarat, embracing the time of the celebrated Ballarat riots in 1854, which were largely the outcome of the buring of Bentley's Hotel. Having lost his brother Charles at Ballarat, he returned to Wellington in 1858, and afterwards left for Lyttelton, where he took up the carrying business between Christchurch and the Port, over the Sumner Hill. During this time he lost his brother George, who was killed on the hill through an accident to Cobb and Co.'s coach. Shortly after this Mr. Diamond came back to Wellington, and entered into partnership with his brother-in-law (the late Mr. James Cattell), when they built the Princess Hotel, which for many years was a favourite hostel of leading members of Parliament. After some time the partners purchased a site on Lambton-quay, and erected the Branch Hotel, which Mr. Diamond conducted up to the time of finally retiring from business. Previous to this they had built the Occidental Hotel, which property Mr. Diamond retained till a few years ago, when he disposed of it to Messrs. Kirkcaldie and Stains. Since 1877 he has lived privately. Deceased always took an enthusiastic interest in athletics, and was a conspicuous figure at football and cricket matches. He was one of the vice-presidents of the Midland Cricket Club, and was one of the oldest members of the D Battery of Artillery. The deceased gentleman, who was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends, never married, but leaves a large number of relatives." (ref NZ papers past, Evening Post, 20 Apr 1914)

1.   Harriet DIMENT
Bap of Harriet Diment 1 Aug 1819 at Whitchurch Canonicorum, Dorset, dau of Elizabeth (ref Ancestry Dorset Births & Baps).

Harriet's birthplace is on the birth registration of their son Henry in 1854. Harriet was born 1819 at Marshwood Dorset England, the illegitimate ('base born') daughter of Elizabeth Diment, a servant at Marshwood. Marshwood is 3 miles NNW of Whitchurch Canonicorum and comes within that parish. See the transcript of Diment parish information from Whitchurch Canonicorum. Unfortunately the name Diment occurs very frequently in Dorset and there is only one record that definitely applies, being Harriet's baptism on 1 Aug 1819 as "Hariot, base born dau of Elizabeth Diment, abode Marshwood, Servant".

In 1841 John and Judith, plus 7 of John's children, and his niece Harriett, migrated to New Zealand on the vessel Lord William Bentinck, arriving 22nd May 1841. John was described as an Agri. Labr. and Flax Dieper, aged 39; Judith was aged 37; the children were Anne (16), David (14), 4 boys aged 12, 11, 8 and 6 (presumably Charles, George, Joseph and Sidney) and a girl aged 3; David was a Laborer, Anne a Sempstress and Harriett a Servant; all were selected by Dr. Rudge (ref FamilySearch, New Zealand Archives).

Harriet married Henry SHADE on 29 April 1844 at the Court House at Wellington, New Zealand (also known as John Henry William Shade). He was born about 1816 at Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, of German descent.

Her subsequent life in Tasmania and Victoria, including their descendants, is described in the Shade tree.

Harriet died in 1899 at Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Henry disappeared after 1854 and despite a police request for information, was not found.
