Bap 21 Feb 1788 at Corscombe, Dorset.
"James son of Thomas & Sarah Diment was baptized Feb 21 (?)" (1788) (ref Ancestry Dorset CofE Baps Marriages & Burials for Corscombe).

It is most likely that James was later known as Jesse; there is no subsequent information about James, and no baptism information about Jesse other than his birth date which is at the time that James's birth happened. Another confirmation is that Jesse and Thomas were next door to each other in the 1841 census.

On 10 Feb 1800 Jesse, at the age of 11, was apprenticed to John Barrett until the age of 21, to be taught in all manner of Husbandry work; he was described as a poor child of the Corscombe parish (ref Ancestry Dorset England Poor Law Apprenticeship Records)

Mr. Diamond arrived here in 1841, and, though never prominently before the public, was always a useful and industrious settler, and brought up a large family in comfort and respectability. For the last few years he has been an invalid, and has undergone much suffering." (Ref NZ Papers Past, Evening Post Vol VI Issue 98, 9 June 1870)

Elizabeth is said to have been working in 1819 as a servant at Marshwood at the birth of her "base born" daughter Harriet, who was baptised at Whitchurch Canonicorum, Dorset. Marshwood is 3 miles NNW of Whitchurch Canonicorum and comes within that parish.

No further definite information found. It is possible that the burial for Elizabeth was on 18 Sep 1826 at Corscombe, age 30 (ref Ancestry Select Dorset Parish Registers). Her father was living in Corscombe in 1822 and probably died there in 1830. If this is so, it is possible that daughter Harriet lived with her uncle John and family, with whom she migrated to New Zealand in 1841.

1.   Simon DIMENT
Born c1807 at Corscombe, Dorset. There is no baptism found for Simon but the witness to his wedding was Jemima Diment (wife of Richard Diment, below) and it would be most usual for a witness to be a sister, not a distant relative (as with the other Simon Diment born c1811, below).

Marriage 20 Sep 1831 at Corscombe of Simon Diment to Elizabeth BEDGOOD; both were of the parish; married by Banns; witnesses were an illegible one, and Jemima Diment, with the same signature as on her marriage to Richard Diment, so I am assuming this is his sister (ref Ancestry Dorset CofE Marriages & Banns image). There is a curious document in Ancestry dated 4 Feb 1793 called a Removal Order directed at the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Parish of Corscombe in respect of John Dimont, Jane his wife and Elizabeth their daughter, that they "a good half a year have lately intruded themselves into your said parish of Corscombe" and that they should forthwith be removed from Corscombe and conveyed to East Coker, Somerset as being their last legal place of settlement (ref Ancestry Dorset Poor Law Settlement and Removal Records).
Presumably they returned to Corscombe by 1798.

No further information found. Most public trees give him the marriage to Elizabeth Bedgood in 1831, but the signatory of Jemima Diment, the discrepancies in his age, and the age gap between himself and Elizabeth make this a most unlikely match so I have placed that marriage further up in this generation.
