Dated at Kimberley, South Africa, 6 October 1900, signed Helena M A Borthwick, Surviving spouse. Amended Death Notice, provided in Ancestry. No UK probate found. He died during the Siege of Mafeking in the Second Boer War.

Helena does not appear in the UK 1901 and 1911 census records.
She returned to England before the 1921 census record was taken.

John Henry Durando [sic] migrated to Australia on the vessel Port Caroline age 18, single, arriving 21 Apr 1890 (ref Ancestry Victoria passenger list); arrival port unclear.

On 2 Feb 1891 John Henry Duranda was listed for Criminal trial at the Sydney Quarter Sessions in New South Wales (ref NSW Police Gazette).
He was sentenced for stealing with 2 years hard labour at Sydney Gaol (ref 1891 Police Gazette).

In 1893 he was again charged.
"John Henry Duranda, charged with stealing a coat, a vest, and a pair of trousers, value £5 (recovered), the property of Charles Bethune, has been arrested by Senior-constable Ross and Constable Fenwick, Sydney Police. Sentenced to three months' hard labour. Also charged with stealing a suit of clothes, a silver chain, a silver match-box, a book containing a number of foreign stamps, and a revolver, value £110 (revolver and book containing stamps recovered), the property of Charles Bethune. Committed for trial at Quarter Sessions." ("Vide Police Gazette, 1893, page 442." (ref Ancestry, 1894 New South Wales Police Gazette).

On 23 Apr 1903 he was further committed for trial as John Henry Durandean in the South Australia Criminal Court, age 31:
"Feloniously steal one set of stocks, value £9, property of one Frank Robert Burden, at Adelaide, April 8th, 1903; also feloniously steal one rifle, value £5, property of one John William Crompton, at Adelaide, on or about April 20th, 1903; also feloniously steal one gold watch, silver chain, and match-box, to the value of £6, property of one Henry Osborne McCormack, at Adelaide, April 22nd, 1903." In Dec 1905 he travelled to San Francisco, California from Sydney age 34, single on the vessel Ventura, in the name of John Henry Dunn.

In 1908 there was a further event.
"John Henry Dunne alias John Henry Durander, charged with stealing articles value £10 (recovered), the property of Cosmo Murray, has been arrested by Senior-constable Wilson and Constables Carman, Best and Lenehan, Sydney Police. Sentenced to six months' hard labour. Identical with discharged prisoner John Henry Durander (vide Police Gazette, 1892, page 338)." (ref Ancestry, 1908 NSW Police Gazette)

As John Henry Durandu, he married on 20 Apr 1910 at St Thomas, Sydney, New South Wales, to Margaret Isabel SPIKE; he was age 38, son of John Edward and Mary Alice; she was age 29, dau of Edward and Sarah Elizabeth (ref Ancestry, Sydney Anglican Parish Registers).

Next information was his death on 30 Oct 1947. He was buried at Macquarie Park, NSW.

On 9 Dec 1872 he enlisted in the British Army, stating that he was a hairdresser, giving a false age of 21 in the 35th Regiment (Royal Sussex); after training he was posted to 107th (Bengal Light Infantry) at Secunderabad, India. He had various postings around India.
