George's details were supplied by Personal Ref 3. At the death of son Vincent in 1917, Vincent's parents were listed as "Wilmyth and Harriet Strickland" (ref www.cwgc.org). The name Wilmeth/Wilmyth does crop up in use in at least 3 generations of the family. At his marriage, George stated that his father's name was William, but this may not be true, as he was known to be illegitimate. William George Strickland was born on 28 May 1855, illegitimate, at the Union Workhouse, Stroud, Gloucestershire; his mother named as Ann Strickland. On 14 Jun 1855 he was baptized at Stroud. In 1866, aged 11, he was apprenticed as a hairdresser. On 9 Dec 1872 he enlisted in the British Army, stating that he was a hairdresser, giving a false age of 21 in the 35th Regiment (Royal Sussex); after training he was posted to 107th (Bengal Light Infantry) at Secunderabad, India. He had various postings around India. Death of George uncertain (since Harriet married again in 1890) ; there is one who died in 1911 (ref Ancestry India Select Deaths & Burials).
