There is a shipping registration on the vessel 'Thames' for Mr Edward Millard aged 31 arriving 26 Aug 1893 at Southampton from Buenos Aires, Argentina (ref Ancestry). The record appears to show him as a missionary together with some others. He was probably connected with the Inland China Mission, as they visited Clara in 1901.

He was transferred to the Sydney office shortly before war was declared, and soon after joined the Commonwealth Bank, where he only stayed a short time, as he enlisted in January, 1916, obtaining his commission in the infantry before leaving Australia.
