MILLARD. - On the 21st inst., at Tunbridge-wells, Mr. Edward Millard, of London House, aged thirty-six." (Ref Morning Post Sat 26 Sep 1863) =================================================================================== He is buried in Woodbury Park Cemetery where his memorial reads "Edward Millard/ who fell asleep/ September 21st 1863/in his 37th year/ "Not slothful in/business; fervent in/spirit;serving the Lord" Romans XXII.11/ "Be ye also ready" / Also Mary/eldest daughter/of the above/who died June 12th 1864/in her ninth year. The following reference is taken from an 1866 autobiography by an ardent fellow Non Conformist called Robert Cowtan. "I fear that I have tired the patience of my readers in lingering so long at Tunbridge Wells ; but it is a place very interesting to me, inasmuch as I have spent many happy weeks there in the society of a valued friend, who has been my companion in many a ramble, and who was cut down in a day, and withered like a flower, save that his memory is cherished by a large circle of friends, who could not but love a man in whom was found so many excellences, and whose Christian character commanded the respect and admiration of all who knew him. Some one has truly said, that " To live in hearts we leave behind Is not to die." And this is eminently true of him whose mortal remains are laid in a secluded spot of the little cemetery near the town, where he spent the last few years of his short, but happy and useful life, and within a few yards of the last resting-place of the late distinguished physician. Dr.Golding Bird, who was also removed in the meridian of life another martyr to an overworked brain and one who will not soon be forgotten by the many patients that have profited by his great professional skill. The plain simple slab, that bears the name of " Edward Millard,"*covers the remains of a friend that will ever be embalmed in the memory of the writer of these pages. * See a useful and elegant funeral Sermon preached by the Rev. W. Landels, on the occasion of the sudden death of this good man, entitled, " In Memoriam. A Tribute to the Memory of Edward Millard. London, 1863. 12mo. Published by Simpkin and Co." Young men would do well to read and ponder this Sermon. This material provided by J. Bridgeman, Secretary to the Friends of Woodbury Park cemetery, Tunbridge Wells, in 2014. ===================================================================================== Ref 1871 census. At an inquest at Southport (England) on 13th September, on the body of Mrs. Stuart Edwards, aged 59, the wife of William Doran Stuart Edwards, Anerley-hill, Upper Norwood, London, who died at Southport on Sunday, the husband said that no doctor was called in, but all possible means were tried to induce his wife to take nourishment. She refused, and when food was put into her mouth she spat it out, exclaiming, "More hell, more devils!" On Sunday when attendants tried to give her grape juice, she said, "No, don't." The witness added that he and his wife were associated with a "religion" known as "divine healing." They believed that Christ by His death "bore our sickness and sin and healed our diseases." He was not a believer in medical men, and latterly his wife shared his views. He thought it right not to send for a doctor. Whatever happened he would never be attended by a doctor, preferring to leave himself in God's hands. God knew far better than they whether it was better for his wife to recover or not. Medical evidence showed that death was due to pneumonia in both lungs and a fatty heart. The doctor said that the woman would have been much better in an institution for mental trouble. The Coroner said there was not sufficient evidence that neglect to call assistance accelerated death. He returned a verdict of death according to the medical evidence."
