Bap 8 Feb 1778 at Dean, Cumberland, dau of William Grave (ref FamilySearch & fmp).

Banns of marriage between John Gloag of this parish, batchelor, and Mary Grave of the parish of Allhallows, spinster, were published on the three Sundays underwritten: Sun 8 Nov 1801, Sun 15 Nov 1801, Sun 22 Nov 1801 (ref Torpenhow parish records).

Her marriage was 24 Nov 1801 at Allhallows parish to John GLOAG; the parish register states "November 24, 1801, John Gloag of Torpenhow & Mary Graves of Bagrow were married by Banns by me Thos Singleton, Assistant Curate. This marriage was solemnised between us John Gloag, Mary Graves in the presence of us Thos Pattinson [who married her sister Catherine], Joseph Graves". Joseph Graves has not been identified.

John was described as an Innkeeper of Aspatria between 1813 and 1820. He appears at the Sun Inn at Aspatria in Gazetteers of Cumberland of 1829 and 1847. John was born c1777 in Blennerhasset, Cumberland (ref 1851 census).

Mary presumably died between 1820 and 1828, her burial not found in the area of Aspatria.

John married (2) 30 Oct 1828 at Aspatria, Cumberland to Jane GRAVES (ref findmypast but not found in Aspatria records online). There are several possible baptisms in the IGI with no immediate connection to this tree though it seems coincidental. Jane was born c1776 in Aspatria, Cumberland (ref 1851 census). Being 52 at marriage, she may have been a widow.

Born c1781 at Allhallows, Cumberland (ref 1851 census). Her baptism not found.

Her marriage was 20 Dec 1802 at Allhallows parish to Thomas PATTINSON; the parish register states "December 20, 1802, Thos Pattinson & Catherine Graves both of this parish were married by Banns by me Thos Singleton, Assistant Curate. This marriage was solemnised between us Thos Pattinson, Catherine Graves, in the presence of us William Richardson, Sarah Graves". Sarah may have been her mother. Bap of Thomas Pattinson 13 Jan 1779 at Allhallows, Cumberland, son of John Pattinson (ref Ancestry England Select Births & Christenings & fmp).

In 1811 Thomas was of High Wood Nook, Waller and the baptism was at Torpenhow.
In 1813 and 1815 they lived at Upmanby (ref baptisms).
In 1819 and 1821 they lived at Bothel and he was a Waller (ref baptisms).

3.   Samuel GRAVE
Bap of Samuel Grave 27 Dec 1782 (ref FamilySearch, Cumbria Parish Registers). Not found in fmp. he was born at Torpenhow, Cumberland (ref 1851 census).

On 13 Jan 1815 there is a burial registered of William Grave of Bagraw aged 59 years in the Allhallows Bishops' Transcript. William Grave is listed in the Index to Death Duty Registers in fmp, naming his son Samuel of Bagrow as administrator.

Marr (1) 8 Apr 1820 at Torpenhow, Cumberland of Samuel Grave to Jane JACKSON (ref Ancestry Select Marriages).

Jane died between 1821 and 1824, record not found.

Marr (2) 12 Jun 1824 at Wigton, Cumberland of Samuel Graves to Ruth BARNES (ref Ancestry England Select Marriages & fmp). In the document in FamilySearch it states that he was widowed. Bap of Ruth Barns 9 Jul 1799 at Gray Rigg, Kendal, Westmorland, dau of Joseph & Ann (ref Ancestry England Select Births & Christenings).

4.   William GRAVE
Occupation: Owner of Stone Quarry, and Farmer.
Bap of William Grave 30 Dec 1784 (ref FamilySearch, Cumbria Parish Registers. He was born at Blennerhasset, Cumberland (ref 1851 census).

He was possibly the witness to the marriage of John Grave and Sarah Stanwix in 1815 at Allhallows.

Marr 22 Feb 1816 to Mary HEWER (ref IGI).
The parish register of Allhallows has the wording: "22 Feb 1816. William Grave of this parish, batchelor, and Mary Hewer of the parish of Aspatria, spinster, by License in the presence of John Norman and John Grave." Mary was bap 6 Apr 1787 at Castle Sowerby, Cumberland, England (ref IGI), daughter of John HEWER and Mary IRELAND. She had sisters Jane (bap 18 May 1783) and Margaret (bap 23 Aug 1805 at St Andrews, Penrith, Cumberland and buried 25 Mar 1806 at same place). John Hewer was an Auctioneer of Cockermouth, and in the Carlisle Journal of 5 Jan 1833, Mr William Grave of Baggraw is named in relation to showing a property of an Isaac Bell for sale.

The parish register of Allhallows has the baptisms of each of the six children; William's occupation is given as stonecutter between 1818 and 1825, and farmer in the 1828 baptism. His residence is always given as Bagraw.

In 1820 and 1824 he is listed as a Churchwarden at Allhallows.

Marr 1809 to John IRVING; "John Irving of this parish, batchelor, joiner and carpenter, and Sarah Grave of this same parish, spinster, were married in this church by licence this 16th May 1809" (ref Torpenhow parish records).

In 1809 John was a carpenter of Torpenhow, and in 1811-1816 a carpenter of Bothel.
An 1841 census in Manchester may be for them, being John (a joiner), Sarah and William of appropriate ages, none born in Lancashire.

Marr 17 Apr 1814 at Harrington, Cumberland (as Graves) to Eleanor HAYTON (ref IGI). She was bap 15 Jun 1794 at Harrington, Cumberland, dau of Daniel Hayton and Ann (ref IGI).

Children Ann and William were baptised in 1816 and 1819 at Harrington.
The rest of the children were baptised between 1821 and 1836 at Aspatria. Thomas was either a labourer, mason or waller in these records.

7.   John GRAVE
Bap 7 Apr 1791 at Allhallows, Cumberland, son of William Grave of Bagraw, mason, and Sarah his wife (late Head) (ref Bishops' Transcript in FamilySearch and IGI).

There is a marriage on 25 Nov 1815 at Allhallows which is most likely him, to Sarah STANWIX. The BT record has 'John Grave of this parish, batchelor, and Sarah Stanwix of this parish, spinster, by License in the presence of George White and William Grave.'

John was probably the witness of the marriage of William Grave to Mary Hewer in 1816 in Allhallows.

On 23 Feb 1817 at Allhallows there is the burial of John GRAVE of Brayton Lodge, aged 25 years. There is no other mention of Brayton Lodge in the Allhallows records online.

On 31 Oct 1817 there is the burial of Sarah GRAVE of Harbybrow, aged 27 years. People of the name of White and Wilkinson lived at Harbybrow, and there is a marriage of Jane Stanwix to Joseph Wilkinson in 1823, and her death in 1825 aged 28, at Allhallows parish, location Harbybrow. She was probably Sarah's sister.

The reason for the deaths of three people in their twenties has not been found.

Marr 9 May 1818 (as Grave) at Aspatria, Cumberland to Jane PETRE (ref IGI). Bap of Jane PETREE 8 Jun 1794 at Camerton, Cumberland, dau of John Petree & Jane Bell (ref Ancestry England Select Births & Christenings) however, looking at her father and siblings, the proper spelling was PETRIE. .

At 1819 baptism, Henry was listed as of Blennerhasset, Carpenter.
At the bap of daughter Dorothy in 1835 Henry was listed as Carpenter of Aspatria.

    NOTE: In this generation there was another WILLIAM GRAVE who married SARAH and had a child JOHN GRAVE baptised 25 Feb 1827 at Aspatria, Cumberland (ref findmypast). There is not a single such marriage in findmypast in the years 1920 +- 10 in Cumberland. There are no other children in Cumberland of this named couple. This is too late for Sarah Head.
