3. | William
Henry GROCOCK Born 17 Jan 1822, bap 11 Feb 1822 at Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, England (ref IGI). Ancestry indexes this entry as Inman Henry but it is extremely hard to read and is probably 'William' in accordance with the subsequent baptism entry on 25 Dec which also gives the birth date of 17 Jan. That entry for 25 Dec 1822 at Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, England is indexed in IGI also. Samuel was an Oilman of Acton Street in the entry for 25 Dec 1822. According to Percival Serle, he was a handsome man with black hair and blue eyes, much vivacity, and fine manners. There was some suggestion that there was a French strain in his family. He was sent to a good school which Percival's mother thought was Eton, but his name does not appear on the school list. He studied medicine, then was left some legacies and went into business as an auctioneer and valuer of antiques. Not found in 1841 census. Marr (1) 25 Jan 1851 at the parish church of St George Bloomsbury, Middlesex, to Emily WATSON. The marriage was registered Mar qtr 1851 at St Giles District (ref original indexes). William was a bachelor of full age, profession Traveller, his residence being 5 Amelia Place, New Cross. Emily was a spinster of full age, her residence being 30 Great Russell St. Her father was John Watson, Gentleman. The witnesses were H S Watson (possibly her cousin Henry Sparkes Watson, or else a misprint for Sarah Susan) and E H Wood ie Edward Henry Wood, Emily's brother in law (All details from marriage certificate.) Emily was born 7 Jan 1820 at Buntingford, Hertfordshire, dau of John Watson & Ann Bray. See WATSON TREE for further information. Ref 1851 census. Kent, England. Parish of Deptford St Paul. Ecclesiastical Parish of St James. Registration District of Greenwich. Address is scribbled out. William H Growcock. Husband. Age 29. Commercial Traveller. Born Middlesex. Emily Growcock. Wife. Age 25. Born Herts, Buntingford. Lived at 7 Westbourne Park Rd, Paddington, London in 1852. William, Emily and Kate arrived in Victoria, Australia by unassisted passage on the vessel "Sussex" in Nov 1855. His occupation was Auctioneer, Accountant, Valuer (ref Kate's birth certificate) Hotelkeeper (ref his DC) [but not found in the Cole/Tetlow index of hotel licensees in Victoria]. Emily died 24 Dec 1857 at Windsor, Vic (Vic reg 6222), bur 25 Dec 1857 at St Kilda Cemetery, C of E B No 26. She died by accident, the cause being 'accidentally burnt' - Coroner, Melbourne. William gave permission in 1868 for the marriage of his daughter Kate aged 16 to Walter Henry Serle, and was a witness (ref her marriage cert). Marr (2) 1870 in Victoria (Vic reg 1031) to Emma BLUNDEN, born c1842. There are options in 1842 at Steyning and Basingstoke, both in Sussex, but no evidence to say which. William died 11 Aug 1873 at Bendigo St, Prahran (Vic reg 7950), bur 13 Aug 1873 at St Kilda Cemetery, C of E B No 26. Emma died 1882 at Prahran, Victoria age 40; her parents and place of birth are unknown on the record.(Vic reg 6596). In Percival Serle's autobiography, he describes how he and his family spent from late 1884 to the end of 1885 in England and Europe. They made their headquarters with 'an aunt of my mother's, Mrs. Wood, their house was just outside the Harrow-Weald station on the London and North-Western railway about 11 miles from London...it was then lovely pastoral country'. The name 'Harrow' was used later for the Serle houses in Melbourne. Sarah Susan Watson (Mrs Wood) was Emily's sister. FROM WHOM ELIZABETH SHADE NEE GRIERSON IS DESCENDED. |
