Issue of Samuel Hemsley and Mary Waghorne
1.   William HEMSLEY WAGHORNE
William was baptised 13 Apr 1765 at Framfield, Sussex, as William, the natural son of Mary Waghorne.

At the end of the same month, Mary married Samuel Hemsley so it is safe to assume that William was Samuel's child. In the marriage shown below, at William's marriage he used the name William Hemsley Waghorne, but the name Waghorne was dropped off with the birth of the children.

William married Elizabeth SMITH on 22 Dec 1802 at Twineham, Sussex; there are two copies of the marriage information, one a short version, as "Wm Emsley Hunt (or Runt?) horn" and the standard longer version (as William Hemsley Waghorne). Twineham is 8 miles south of Slaugham, and is very close to Bolney (refer the Smith family).

SMITH FAMILY
Elizabeth Smith was baptised on 4 Apr 1784 at Bolney, Sussex, daughter of Peter Smith & Frances [Evans] (ref Ancestry England Select Births and christenings).

It seems likely that Elizabeth's father Peter Smith was the Peter John Smith who was buried at St Mary, Bolney on 16 Jul 1806, age 54. His marriage to Frances Evans occurred on 23 Apr 1783 at Twineham, Sussex; Peter was of the parish of Bolney and Frances of the parish of Twineham. A possible baptism for Frances was at Ashington, Sussex on 19 Jun 1763, dau of Charles & Mary Evans, but it is not possible to be sure. The Peter Smith who was a witness at the marriage was her father, as her brother Peter had died young.

Elizabeth had the following siblings: Mary bap 22 May 1785, Henry bap 1 Apr 1787, Peter bap 17 Dec 1788 (buried 4 Feb 1789), John bap 24 Oct 1790, Charles bap 29 Dec 1793 (buried 11 Jan 1795), Charles bap 6 Dec 1795; all were baptised at Bolney, Sussex. DNA analysis proves the existence of two other siblings, Thomas born c1796 at Bolney and Stephen born c1800 at Bolney, both with many descendants; the reason is that descendants of both Thomas and Stephen have a small amount of DNA in common with the writer of this family tree, who is descended from Elizabeth, but there are definitely no baptisms in Bolney for these two brothers; they are living next door to each other at Arundel in the 1851 census but no record can be found of their parentage.

This Smith family is fully documented in the FamilySearch tree.

MORE ABOUT WILLIAM AND ELIZABETH
William was a farmer, as specified in the parish register for the births of his children in 1812 and 1815, and in the 1851 census below.

The 1841 and 1851 census records below link the two parts of the family together, i.e. the first 8 children born at Slaugham (including Elizabeth), and the following 5 children born at Ringmer (including Joseph and Thomas).

William presumably died between 1827 (birth of last child) and 1841 (census).
The most likely death record is for William Hemsley death reg Mar qtr 1838 at East Grinstead, Sussex, age 76 (i.e. born c1762). No probate found.
There is another death record in 1839 at Lewes, age 73, which occurred for a William Hemsley, Labourer, who died at the Workhouse at Ditchling Parish (ref his Death Cert), and so would not have been the William in question.

Ref 1841 census. Sussex, England. Parish of East Grinstead. Address: Forest Row Green. This is next door to her daughter Rebecca.
Together with children Elizabeth (22) [presumably closer to 34], Joseph (19) [index incorrectly has 12], Thomas (14):
Elizabeth Hemsly. Age 55. Ind. Born Sussex.

Ref 1851 census.Sussex, England. Parish of East Grinstead. Ecclesiastical district of Forest Row. Address: Lewes Road, East Grinstead.
Together with children Elizabeth (38), Joseph (28), Thomas (24):
Elizabeth Hemsly. Head. W. Age 75. [about 67] Late widow of a Farmer. On income from her children. Born Sussex, Bolney.

Death reg of Elizabeth Hemsley Sep qtr 1854 in East Grinstead district, age 70. No probate found. This matches a birth of c1784.
