See DUNSFORD tree for further details.

Ref 1841 census. Devon, England. Parish of Kenton. Registration district of St Thomas. Address: Starcross.
Together with presumably dau Eliza (45, age wrong):
James Serle. Age 60. Shoe M. Born in Devon.
Agnes Serle. Age 60. Born in Devon.

Agnes died 18 Nov 1845 at "5 pm at 50 Drummond St London " (ref her death cert). It seems she fell ill while visiting her son and family. It was reg Dec qtr 1845 at St Pancras district (ref FreeBMD). She was buried in St. Giles' Cemetery, Old St. Pancras, London (ref Starcross grave inscription); see her burial record at St Giles In The Fields, London, buried 26 Nov 1845, aged 69; her surname is obscure (ref Ancestry London Burials, Bishop's Transcript).

James' occupation was mariner, fisherman and cobbler. In Agnes' death cert she is stated to be the wife of James Serle, a Gentleman. So by 1845, this shoemaker/cordwainer had accumulated considerable wealth which he invested in housing. Perhaps he inherited money between 1841 and 1845?

Ref 1851 census. Hampshire, England. Address Rectory Lodge, Hamble le Rice.
Together with daughter Eliza (35) (Horsman) and her family:
James Serle. Visitor. Widr. Age 74. Proprietor of Houses. Born Devon, Kenton.

James was buried in the churchyard at Starcross, Devon. The inscription reads "In memory of James Serle who died October 17th. 1855 aged 78. Also of Agnes Serle his wife who died Nov 18th 1845 aged 69 and was buried in St. Giles' Cemetery, Old St. Pancras, London".

In the Will of James written in 1854, most of the considerable estate was bequeathed to his daughter Eliza Horsman, consisting of a house in London and five cottages in Devon, and she was appointed as sole Executrix. Other beneficiaries with small cash amounts were son James and his children Frederick, Walter & Eliza; sons Frederick and Thomas, grandsons Thomas Serle and Frederick and Robert Horsman. A possible reason why Eliza received the bulk of the estate was that all three of the sons had moved away from Devon, two to Australia and one to London.

I James Serle of the District of Starcross in the Parish of Kenton in the County of Devon being of sound and perfect mind do make publish and declare this my last Will and Testament bearing date this twenty seventh day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty four in manner following that is to say first I give and bequeath to my daughter Eliza Horsman the house and cottage number twenty six Hastings Street situate and being in the Parish of Saint Pancras London in the County of Middlesex and four cottages at Starcross and one cottage at Cofford all in the Parish of Kenton aforesaid also all my goods and chattels of whatsoever description and I also appoint her my whole and sole executrix of this my last Will and Testament subject to the following bequest which I enumerate namely she Eliza Horsman my daughter aforesaid shall give to my son James Serle her brother ten pounds and his two sons Frederick Serle five pounds and Walter Serle five pounds and to their sister Eliza Serle five pounds to be paid to them after the expiration of twelve months after my decease also to my son her brother Frederick Serle ten pounds also to Thomas Serle her brother ten pounds to be paid at the expiration of twelve months after my decease and also to Thomas Serle my Grandson ten pounds when he shall have served out his time as an Apprentice Also to my Grandsons Frederick and Robert Horsman twenty pounds to be placed in the Savings Bank until such time as they shall respectively have attained the age of twenty one years and then at such time be equitably proportioned between them Should the before named Eliza Horsman in case of her decease before her two sons Frederick and Robert Horsman shall have respectively attained the age of twenty one years they shall be entitled to receive all that I have herein bequeathed unto their mother and also bequeath to my son in law Robert Horsman five pounds and lastly do I hereby appoint Robert Horsman and James Serle trustees to see that every bequest contained in this my last Will and Testament is fully carried out and are performed.
