Geographical notes: Great Corby is a township in Wetheral parish, Cumberland, on the river Eden and the Newcastle and Carlisle railway, 4 ½ miles east south east of Carlisle. The most significant property is Corby Castle on the brink of a cliff overlooking the river Eden. John's parents lived at Great Corby. Carlisle is comprised of two parishes, St Mary and St Cuthbert; there are two district churches, namely, Holy Trinity, in the parish of St Mary, and Christ Church, in that of St Cuthbert. |
