Ref Trove 5 Oct 1876, The Maitland Mercury:
"DRUNKENNESS AND DISORDERLY CONDUCT. - At the East Maitland police court, on Tuesday, Reuben Bray pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness and disorderly conduct. He was fined 5s. and 2s. 6d. costs, with the alternative of twenty-four hours imprisonment. Charlotte Bray, wife of the above defendant, was then called to answer a similar charge. She did not appear. Constable Barnes proved the service of the summons, and the offence was proved by Constable Stone. The defendant was fined 20s. and 2s. 6d. costs, with the alternative of three days in gaol. A second case against the same defendant for making use of obscene language was dismissed."

Ref Trove 16 Jul 1878, The Maitland Mercury:
"OBSCENE LANGUAGE.- Reuben Bray was charged at the East Maitland police court, on Friday, with having made use of obscene language in a public street in East Maitland. Defendant pleaded gulty and expressed his regret for what had happened. He had been aggravated very much by his wife when he went home, and being a passionate man he made use of the language complained of in his own home. The bench would take into consideration his statement that his wife had annoyed him - and above all his promise to amend. A fine of five shillings was inflicted, with the alternative of twenty-four hours in gaol."

Presumably this is why 1878 Reuben was admitted to Maitland Gaol, NSW age 53. Within a fortnight, Charlotte was dead.
