Burman ~ Third Generation
Issue of Richard Burman | |||
1. | Richard
BURMAN "Of Shottery" in Ancestry, Warwickshire England Extracted Parish Records. Born 1524 (ref page 103, Shakespeare Survey 12, Cambridge University Press and online). "The Richard Burman who gave evidence in Chancery is clearly the tenant of Francis Smyth and the occupier of 'Burmans', upon whose testimony Smyth had relied. Aged sixty in 1584, he was therefore born in 1523-4." (ref C.J.Sisson, Shakespeare Survey 12). "It seems probable that the line of succession at 'Burmans' moved from John Boreman (d. 1467) to Richard Burman I (d. 1539), to Richard Burman II (d. 1558), and to Richard Burman III (b. 1524). " (ref C.J.Sisson, Shakespeare Survey 12). There is available the description of an altercation about a land dispute in Shottery that took place in 1584 in relation to the Court of Chancery in Stratford, Roger Burman, Richard Burman and Stephen Burman were all present; Richard Hathaway alias Gardener (Ann's father) and Foulke Sandells were also involved in this dispute (reported in Shakespeare Survey 12). Refer the National Archives, BRU15/1/31. 1586: "Contents: The tru inventory of Willyam Syches goods taken the xviij.th day of November by the discretyon of Steven Burman, Rychard Burman, Bartholowmewe Hathway and Thomas Burman, 1586." Richard may have been married to Agnes who died in 1609 as a widow, see next generation for entry under Richard's son Richard for a hypothesis on this. There is a burial 29 Oct 1605 at Stratford On Avon of "Ricardus Burman de Shottre, agric" (ref Ancestry Warwickshire Extracted Parish Records) which would fit here. |
