Joseph appeared to partner with Esther PATEMAN from 1859 and had several children with her, eventually marrying her on 30 Jul 1871 at Deptford, Kent. The marriage certifiate has several errors, in stating that he was a bachelor and that his father was William Smith. However, other details seem to fit together and they are in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census records at Deptford.

"The death of Mrs. Bunyan at the ripe old age of 90 years, at the residence of her son, Mr. G. Bunyan, on Sunday last, removed from among us quite an old identity. Until the last few weeks she could be seen taking her usual walk on the Western road daily, until that dire disease cancer set in and did its work slowly though effectively. The funeral was not of so representative a character as it would have been owing to it taking place so early. This was on account of the disease."
