1.   Charles CHAPPLE
Bap of Charles Chapple 16 May 1819 at Walcot St Swithin Parish Church, Bath, Somerset, son of Richard & Jane, address Northampton St (ref Ancestry image).
In his burial record in the Nyack registers his birth is given as 16 Apr 1818.

Migration of Richard and eldest son Charles to America
Richard and Charles migrated to America in 1836 using the name 'ALLEN' as a surname. The shipping records which have been found by John Chapple spell this as 'ALLAN' but there are other family references to Allen indicating that at least some of the children knew of his situation. The second name, Allen, was found in the 1852 marriage of the daughter Frances and in her death certificate, seeming to indicate that she was aware of his name change, and there is a possibility that her husband Edwin Exon visited the Chapple family in New York (Charles died in 1886) when he went there in 1888 & 1899 or 1901 (with thanks to researcher John Chapple 2013).

Charles reverted to his own surname by the time he was noted in official documents in the USA. His son in law Henry De Baun refers to Charles in a sworn affadavit in 1917 as "That my said wife's father was born in England, and became a naturalized citizen of the United States and resided in said County of Rockland about fifty years, until his death" (ref Ancestry U.S. Passport Applications for Watson Edwin DeBaun).

In the 1840 US census, Richard and Charles are not found in Nyack. However, heads of families include Thomas Collier (see below), Isaac Lydecker, John Lydecker and Abraham Lydecker on the same page.

Charles Chapple married Sarah Amanda LYDECKER on 2 Apr 1843 in Nyack, Rockland County, New York, USA, as follows: "At Nyack, April 2nd, by the Rev. Charles S. Hegeman, Mr. Charles Chapple to Miss Sarah Amanda Lydecker, both of the former place" (from the newspaper "Christian Intelligencer of the Reformed Dutch Church", pub. 8 Apr 1943) (ref Ancestry, U.S. Newspaper Extractions from the North East).

She was born 15 Nov 1821 at Clarkstown, Rockland County, New York (ref Findagrave).
She was dau of Harmanus Lydecker & Eve Myers (ref APT and B.Chapple 2011).

In 1841 there is a reference in "Abstracts of Rockland Co." as follows to money owed by Charles Chapple by Thomas Collier:
"No. 890. fol. 82
Charles Chapple of Nyack, creditor of the decedent,
Estate of Thomas Collier of Nyack.
Aug. 7, 1841" (ref John Chapple 2013)

Charles was naturalized 23 Oct 1844 in the Superior Court, New York County; ref C140; Vol or Bundle No 10; copy of Record No. 253; address N.Y.C.; former nationality English; witness Robt. H. Nicholls, N.Y.C. (ref Ancestry).

2.   Elizabeth Jane CHAPPLE
Bap of Elizabeth Jane Chapple 5 Nov 1820 at Walcot St Swithin Parish Church, Bath, Somerset, dau of Richard & Jane, address No. 2 Northampton St (ref Ancestry image).

Elizabeth Jane has been studied extensively for further records, but none are certain. There were several other children of a similar name and time born in Bath.
One such is Elizabeth Chappell born 1817 who married Alfred Parker and went on to have many children.
Another was buried as Elizabeth Chappell on 8 Apr 1822 at St James, Bath age 3Y 7M which would be a close match. However her parents were living at Borough Walls, Bath which is about a mile away from Northampton Street so this seems unlikely.

A search for any of the name of Elizabeth Jane in later records does not give any matches.

There is an 1841 census record for an Eliza Chappell age 20 at 1 Abbey St, Bath which is a possibility but it would be strange as she had a younger sister called Eliza. It is more likely that the second one was called after her.
Further information may be found.

In the 1862 Ballarat Directory, is the entry 'Chapple, William, pastrycook etc' in Eyre Street (East to West, Right Hand).

The following reports confirm that William's shop was on the corner of Eyre and Armstrong streets:
"Early on Monday morning some thief or thieves entered the shop of Mr W. Chapple, at the corner of Eyre street, and stole a quantity of tobacco, and other property, valued at £7." (Trove, The Star, Ballarat, Tue 23 Sep 1862)

It is not certain when Mary Ann emigrated to Victoria, although her parents and other siblings arrived on 2 Sep 1857 on the Hornet. See TARRANT tree for further information.

They had a stillborn child, born and died at Eyre St, Ballarat; bur 24 June 1864 at Ballarat Old Cemetery, location unknown, address of child Eyre St (ref cem records).

The Star is only indexed up to 1864 in Trove.
In the 1865-66 Ballarat directory, there are two listings for William Chapple, grocer, both referring to the corner of Armstrong St and Eyre St.
In 1870 William became insolvent. The report is in Trove (The Argus, 29 Oct 1870):
"NEW INSOLVENTS (Schedule filed in Ballarat.) William Chapple, of Sturt-street, Ballarat, fruiterer and confectioner. Liabilities, £183 19s. 1d.; assets, £10; deficiency £173 19s. 1d."

Richard, wife and 3 children (Richard, Frances and Edwin) departed London on the Tasmania on 18 Feb 1855 and arrived in Melbourne, Victoria on 10 May 1855. They lived in Geelong, and moved to Ballarat between 1857 and 1858.

In Sep 1858, Richard was involved in an occurrence in Ballarat which shows that he was living there from at latest July 1858:
"The Body Found in the Coach – Inquest
An inquest upon the body which was found dead in a coach, as reported in our Wednesday’s issue, was held before the coroner at the Georges Hotel, on the 29th inst. Mr Richard Chapple, confectioner, identified the body as that of a person named Tempest Graham, who had been about four years in the colony, and whom he had known for some three months. He had mentioned to the witness that he had formerly been an officer in the Navy, and was suspended for fighting a duel with a brother officer. He was at the witnesses’ house on the previous Sunday and left about mid-day, after which he never saw him alive. He had never seen him in liquor, nor was he addicted to drinking. Had no profession or calling and worked at every job he can get. Mr Brunig deposed to noticing the man asleep at the bottom of the old coach at the back of Mr Eaves’, Armstrong Street. This was about eight o’clock in the morning. He was lying on the floor of the coach between the seats, and breathing very hardly. He thought him in liquor, and took no notice, until he heard of the dead body being found there. Dr Dimock made a post mortem examination, and deposed that he found a black handkerchief tied tightly round his neck, but not so as to cause strangulation. There was blood oozing from the nostrils. He judged the cause of death to be sanguineous apoplexy, arising from extreme congestion of the membranes of the brain. A verdict in accordance with the foregoing evidence was returned."
(ref Trove, The Star, Ballarat, Vic, Thursday 30th Sep 1858)

In 1859, Richard was working as a confectioner at Mair street, Ballarat:
"Presbyterian Soiree. ... About 200 persons sat down to an ample repast, supplied by Mr Chapple, of Mair street, each alternate seat being spread with edibles, and each other being left vacant for the guests." (ref Trove, The Star, Ballarat, Thur 5 May 1859)

Likewise in 1860:
"The Western Fire Brigade Ball and Supper... Dancing was kept up with spirit till about midnight, when the company adjourned to the supper rooms, where an ample refection had been prepared by Messrs Chapple, confectioners, Mair street." (ref Trove, The Star, Ballarat, Sat 15 Dec 1860)

Likewise in 1861, with the coincidence of a member of the Cazaly family (Peter) providing the entertainment:
"Parliamentary Club Soiree. .. ... company sat down to tables amply furnished by Mr Chapple with the good things usually provided on such occasions. The business of the evening was agreeably enlivened by songs by Messrs D. and A. Oliver, Cazaly, and Pope, who were accompanied on the piano by Mr Turner, conductor of the Philharmonic Society." (ref Trove, The Star, Ballarat, Tue 3 Sep 1861)

William and Richard tried their hands in a gold mining company in March 1861 at forty pounds each:
"THE BUTE GOLD MINING COMPANY, BROWN'S. - We, the Undersigned being a majority in number and value of the shareholders in the Bute Gold Mining Company, situate at Brown's, hereby comment that the said company shall be registered under the provisions of an Act intituled an Act to Limit the Liability of Mining Partnership, made and passed in the 24th year of the reign of Her Present Majesty Queen Victoria, and numbered one hundred and nine."
The list of 35 names includes Richard Chapple and William Chapple.
"THE BUTE GOLD MINING COMPANY, Brown's, (Limited.) - I, the undersigned James Smith, hereby make application to register the Bute Gold Mining Company, (Limited) under the provisions of the Mining Partnership Limited Liability Act, 1860, and I do solemnly and sincerely declare that the following statement is to the best of my belief and knowledge true in every particular:-

The list of names includes 1 share to William Chapple of Raglan st., Ballarat, and 1 share to Richard Chapple of the same street.
(ref Trove: The Star, Ballarat, Sat 9 Mar 1861)

Further note about the BUTE GOLD MINING COMPANY in 1867: "By telegram we learn that the Bute Gold-mining Company's property was, with the exception of the office, entirely consumed, and a loss incurred of about £800. The engine-driver was alone on the claim when the fire brok out, the cause of which is unknown." (The Argus Melbourne Fri 4 Jan 1867)

The following notice appeard in 1861, but the reason for it is not known:
"TO PREVENT MISTAKES. RICHARD CHAPPLE, Pastry Cook and Confectioner. Begs respectfully to inform his customers and the public in general, that he has not removed from Mair street, and trusts by keeping goods at prices to suit the times, to merit a continuance of that patronage so liberally bestowed on him for the last four years.
N.B. - Wedding breakfasts, ball suppers, teas, &c, Supplied on the most Reasonable Terms." (ref Trove, Star, Ballarat, Sat 10 Aug 1861)

In the 1862 Ballarat Directory is the entry 'Chapple, R., pastry cook and confectioner' in Mair Street.
In 1863 Richard was still working as a confectioner:
"Borough Council of Ballarat. .. From R. Chapple, asking permission to erect a booth for the sale of confectionary in the Botanical Gardens on New Year's Day." (ref Trove, The Star, Ballarat, Tue 22 Dec 1863)

They had five known stillborn children, all born in Ballarat, and buried at Ballarat Old Cemetery on (1) 4 Nov 1861, (2) 24 Nov 1862, (3) 1 Aug 1863, possible twin to Janet, (4) 27 July 1864, (5) 10 Apr 1865 (ref cemetery records, location unknown, only information given is address of Ballarat).

Curiously, the following notice has been found in the Star, Ballarat, in 1864. It is unclear why this would have occurred (it was not specified as an insolvent estate), unless it is referring to another Richard Chapple, perhaps the father of this one?:
"WEDNESDAY, 23rd MARCH. By order of the Trustees in the Estate of RICHARD CHAPPLE.
J.S. Carver has received instructions to sell by auction, on the premises, Raglan street, next to the Red House Baker, on Wednesday, 23rd March, at 12 o'clock,
The equity of redemption of allotment 10, section 20, on which is erected shop and dwelling -- a first-class position for business.
Immediately after the above,
Shop glasses, Lolly and biscuit machines, baking tins, cutters and dockers, trucks, skillets, pans, mortar, stove, trough, sponge pans, patty pans, Cape hoops and tins, shop stove, scales, and weights, tanks." (ref Trove, Star, Ballarat, Mon 21 Mar 1864)
And further to this:
"IN the Estate of RICHARD CHAPPLE, a first and final dividend is now payable at the office of the undersigned, Armstrong street. F. M. CLAXTON and CO." (Trove, Star, Ballarat, Tue 17 May 1864).

The Star is only indexed up to 1864 in Trove. There is never more than one Richard Chapple in the Ballarat directories searched from 1856-1866.

In the 1865-66 Ballarat directory is the entry 'Chapple, Richard, confectioner, Raglan Street'. This might have referred to the business above which was sold in 1864.
Richard's residence was Ballaarat West in 1865.

Ann Maria died 2 Nov 1865 at Ballaarat West, Victoria, Australia (Vic reg 8042). She was buried 5 Nov 1865 at Ballarat Old Cemetery (CofE) (ref her Death Certificate) or 4 Nov as recorded at the Old Cemetery. The details are: age 36; Area CEN, Sec 7, Row 2, Grave 20, with husband Richard and his daughter Florence, headstone CHAPPEL.

Richard Chapple's two wives, Ann Maria EXON and Matilda Ada SAVILL, were first cousins, their mothers being sisters.

In 1877 Richard became insolvent. The report is in Trove (The Argus, 18 Sep 1877):
"NEW INSOLVENTS. Richard Chapple, confectioner, Ballarat. Causes of insolvency - Losses in business and pressure of creditors. Liabilities £246 2s. 6d.; assets, £2; deficiency, £244 2s. 6d, Mr. H. Levinson, assignee."

Richard died 23 May 1881 at Eyre St, City of Ballarat, Victoria (Vic reg 3467), bur 24 May 1881 at Ballarat. His death cert incorrectly gives his mother as Fanny Craig instead of Jane Grigg. His cemetery details are: age 53, occupation Confectioner, Area CEN, Sec 7, Row 2, Grave 20, with wife Ann Maria and his daughter Florence, headstone CHAPPEL.

After Richard's death Matilda and the surviving children moved from Ballarat to Melbourne (ref Barry Chapple).

Matilda died 10 Feb 1885 at Richmond, Victoria aged 40 (Vic reg 3081), bur 11 Feb 1885 at Melbourne General Cemetery (Church of England). The younger surviving children came under the guardianship of Edwin and Frances EXON, Frances being Richard's sister (ref Barry Chapple).
