Son. 100 Chapel St, Prahran. He was aged 23. (ref Death Cert). Alfred married (1) on 27th Jan 1883 at Gore Street, Fitzroy, Victoria, according to rites of Baptist Church, to Sarah Ann BYSOUTH, (ref Marriage Cert). Sarah was born 1860 at Richmond (Vic reg 1492). His usual residence was Windsor, age 23, photographer. He was a bachelor. Sarah was 23, an Artiste, spinster, born Melbourne. She was a daughter of James Bysouth, Constable, and Elizabeth Ann Bickle. The witnesses were Alfred Burman and second person obscure, probably Bysouth. See BYSOUTH tree. In 1888 they were living at 2 Princes Street, Prahran (ref Birth Cert of Ada held by LS). Sarah also had a relationship with James John Charles BRISSENDEN and gave birth to three children with him. In 1899 he was the informant for the death of Sarah's father. Birth reg of James John C Brissenden Jun qtr 1870 at Pancras dist, Middlesex (ref FreeBMD). In 1871 he is in the census living with his grandfather, James J C Brissenden, Late Mariner, at William Street, St John, Hackney. In 1881 he is living with his father John J C Brissenden and family as a Scholar at 1 Marys Cottage, Higham St, Walthamstow, Essex. Between 1881 and 1894, J J C Brissenden migrated to Melbourne. The relationship between Sarah and J J Charles extended at least from 1894 to 1900. Sarah's daughter with Charles Brissenden, Maude (born 1897), was brought up in Adelaide away from her half siblings but was well known to them (ref oral history of M.J.Codgebrook nee Shade). Sarah died 1905, Carlton (Vic reg 8365). Sarah died 24 Sep 1905 at 101 Madeline Street, Smith Ward, City of Melbourne, County of Bourke. She was a housewife, aged 45 years, died of Cerebral Apoplexy, Not Certified, Reported to Coroner who deemed an Inquest unnecessary; parents James Bysouth, Senior Constable, and unknown Bysouth, M.N. unknown; informant was A J Johnson, Husband, 120 Neill St, Carlton; she was buried on 26 Sep 1905 at General Cemetery Melbourne; born in Richmond, since birth in Victoria; married in Fitzroy at the age of 23 to Alfred James Johnson; children Lucy Elizabeth Emily 21, Alfred Henry 18, Ada 16 [note that there is no mention of Maude who was about 8 at the time] (ref her Death Certificate). In the period 1906-07 there are shipping records on Ancestry showing C. Brissenden working as a Steward on board vessels between Melbourne and Sydney such as the "Hobart". In 1908, marriage in Victoria of Jas Jno Chas Brissenden to Augusta Florence BROWN (ref Ancestry Australia Marriages reg 1459). They moved to Adelaide and had a daughter, Jessie Elizabeth Agnes Brissenden in 1914, and probably Walter, Frank and James John Charles (ref APT and Ancestry Australia birth records). Meanwhile, Alfred became a traveller and Monumental Mason working in Echuca, and on 17 Apr 1906 he married again, this time to Annie Rebecca MOLLAR nee KENNEDY, a widow with 3 children. The wedding was at 448 Queen St, Melbourne; Alfred was born in Melbourne, age 46. residence Echuca, son of Thomas Johnson, Hairdresser, and Hannah Burman; Annie was born in Hobart, Tasmania, age 35, residence 319 Canning St Carlton, dau of Patrick Kennedy, Gentleman, and Catherine Kelly (ref Marriage Certificate held by LS). Annie was born c1871 in Hobart. Annie's mother (Catherine (Kate) Kelly) was married 4 times, to James Burton, John Oswald, Patrick Kennedy and Thomas Rennard; Annie used any one of her mother's surnames (such as using Oswald in her marriage to John Mollar, and Kennedy in her marriage to Alfred Thomas Johnson). She had 2 children with defacto husband Axel Petersen. When she left Alfred Thomas Johnson she, her two children and a baby granddaughter went back to Hobart and changed the surname of the children back to Mollar. It is not clear whether Alfred and Annie divorced, but in 1920 Annie either married or was in a relationship with Thomas McLaughlin. In 1922 Annie was in a relationship with Edward Henry Summers. Her death certificate (died 24 Feb 1944 at St John's Park, Hobart, age 76) names her as Ann McLaughlin, but the marriage stated there gives her age as 18 years and so refers to her marriage to John Mollar. (Ref Private Source 3) Alfred remained in Echuca as a mason at least from 1909 to 1916 (ref Electoral Rolls). In 1917 his partnership was dissolved: "Notice is hereby given that the partnership heretofore sibsisting between JAMES NUTTALL of Echuca, monumental mason, and ALFRED THOMAS JOHNSON of Echuca, aforesaid, traveller, under the style of Nuttall and Johnson, carrying on business as Monumental Masons at Echuca, has been DISSOLVED as and from the seventh day of June, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen.
