1. | Percy
James HITCHMAN Birth reg of Percy James Hitchman Jun qtr 1906 at Wandsworth dist, London, mother's name McDonell (ref GRO Index). Ref 1911 census. London, England. Parish of Wandsworth. Registration district of Wandsworth. Address: 145 Lessingham Avenue, Upper Tooting SW. Together with his grandmother, brother, uncle and cousin: Percy James Hitchman. Grandson. Age 4 1/2. Born Streatham London SW. In 1931 Percy wrote a letter to his second cousin once removed, Percival Serle, regarding his grandmother, Emily Susan Sibley: 26, Knowle Road, Brixton, London S.W.9. 13/11/31. Dear Mr. Searle, I must acknowledge the receipt of your letter and the present for my grandmother. As I am returning it, you may guess the sad cause. I regret very much to have to tell you that my poor dear grandmother passed away on August 26th last. I certainly should have written to inform you at once. Forgive me, but I had such a lot to do then, and as I knew you would be writing, I thought I would wait until I heard from you. As you may remember, my brother and I were teaching at the school at Wanstead. We despaired of getting a decent degree in evening-work, so with the help of a scholarship or two of small dimensions, we were enabled to leave our work and come and live with grannie at the end of July. She had been failing in health for a long time, and one of the reasons of my leaving my resident post was my desire of being at home to look after her. Of course I saw her regularly, but since Chistmas I had had to get the help of a good woman who lives in the same house. When we got home, grannie was better for a time, but the doctor, who came to her regularly, said she ought to go to a nursing home. By this time I was trying to look after her myself without any other help. I was in despair, for having just given up my job, I just couldn't afford to pay for a nursing home. However, by moving heaven and earth, I managed to find a step-son of my grandmother (sho has lived in India and Australia) who offered to make himself responsible for all the costs. You may imagine my joy! For I found myself utterly incapable of giving the skilled attention so necessary to a nursing-home case. So I got her into a nice nursing-home in Brixton Hill. She was 88 (nearly 89) and suffering from heart trouble, but she was very brave about it all. She was quite happy in the home, was well looked after, and we went to see her every day. She did not know she was dying, yet was quite clear and lucid mentally, right to the end. I saw her an hour before she died. I made all the funeral arrangements, and on August 31st she was buried with her husband in Forest Hill Cemetery. It was a beautiful funeral and the coffin was covered in flowers. We felt that it was a merciful release, as life towards the end was such a burden to her. But we mourned her loss deeply, as we loved her dearly; she had brought us up right from our early years (my brother from 12 months and myself from four years old). She always did her best for us, looked after us, and got us into the school you saw when you visited us. She was a noble character, and we feel we have lost our best friend. I know you will be grieved to hear of her death. I know I should have written to you straight away; but you must forgive me, as I had a very worrying time in August, for everything fell to me to do. Grannie always used to tell us to keep in touch with you, as real friends. We have not so many of these in the world now, so perhaps, especially as we have had the pleasure of meeting you, you would not mind us keeping up a correspondence with you. We should like it very much. We are taking our degrees next June. We have secured various small grants to keep us going for two years, while we work at College in the day-time. After our degrees, we are going through the Education Department at King's College, Strand, to do the year's work for the Teaching Diploma; this is to enable us to get a job in a secondary school. We have not moved from this address, and shall continue to stay here. We vacated a flat that we were occupying when you paid us a visit; but the good woman I spoke of, has given us her two best rooms on the ground floor. We have some of our own furniture, and she looks after us. She is very reasonable and by being careful, we just manage to make both ends meet. It is worth the trouble, for at the end of our course (July 1933), we shall be fully equipped with an Honours Degree and a Teaching Diploma for teaching in secondary schools. Another point in our favour is that we have already had five years' experience. Well, I am afraid I have written a terribly long letter! Perhaps you don't mind that, however, I sincerely hope you are in the best of health; your wife and mother well, and Betty and Bob. I should very much like to know how you all are. Please give them all my best regards, and my brother's as well. I hope the situation in Australia will improve. Ours at the moment is bad enough, a depreciated currency, knocked off the gold-standard, an unbalanced budget, nearly three million unemployed, and a "crisis" requiring a national coalition government to deal with it! However, we shall pull through, as we have done before. I thought the best thing I could do was to return your present to grannie of the Money-Order. I don't quite understand the workings of the international post office, but if this gets back to you, I shouldn't think any harm could come to the deposit. Well, I sincerely hope you will have a jolly and a happy Christmas and a very prosperous New Year. Yours very sincerely, Percy J. Hitchman This letter was kept in the effects of Percival Serle and eventually passed down to his granddaughter, Libby Shade, so it must have been regarded as a precious memory of their visit in 1928.
