Grierson BROADFOOT Bapt 1 Jul 1832 at Kirkgunzeon, Kircudbright, Scotland. Listed as John Bradfute, son of James Bradfute and Jane Greir (ref www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk). Ref 1841 census. Lanarkshire, Scotland. Parish of Glasgow St Marys. Address: King St Clase 48, Glasgow. Together with his parents and siblings: John Broadfoot. Male. Age 7. Born Scotland. Ref 1851 census. Lanarkshire, Scotland. Parish of Gorbals. Address: 100 Eglington Street, Gorbals. Together with his parents and siblings: John Broadfoot. Son. Male. Age 18. Black Smith. Born L Kirkguengeos, Kirkcudbright. Emigrated to Victoria in 1853 on the 'Banker's Daughter' from Dumfries, Scotland (see shipping record). Occupation School teacher; there are government school records regarding his fraud conviction and subsequent efforts to get a teaching position. In 1864 John Grierson Broadfoot wished to stand for election for local office. "THE GENERAL ELECTION [PER ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH]. PORT ALBERT, Thursday. At noon, to-day, the returning-officer declared the undermentioned gentlemen to have been duly nominated as candidates for the representation of this district :_ Mr. Peter Snodgrass, gentleman. Mr John Grierson Broadfoot, schoolmaster, at Tarraville. Mr. John Goulson Burtt, importer. Mr. Burtt is a nominee of the Australian Reform League, and arrived yesterday by s.s. Keera just in time to place his nomination in the hands of the returning-officer. The contest will really be between this gentleman and Mr. Snodgrass. Should Mr. Broadfoot go to the poll (which is not likely), the return of Mr. Snodgrass is certain. The alternative will produce a very sharp contest, but will result, so far as I am able to judge, in favour of Mr. Snodgrass. The two popular candidates were present to-day at the nomination, but neither of them addressed the electors, although a large concourse had assembled." (The Argus 24 Sep 1864) In 1866 John was in trouble with the law. "CITY COURT. Monday, April 30. (Before Mr. Sturt, P.M., Mr. Hackett, P.M. and Mr. Sutherland J.P.) Remands. - ....John Griers, alias Broadfoot, on the charge of forgery, was remanded to Taradale, where the offence was alleged to have been committed." (The Argus 1 May 1866) A full report from The Argus, 20 Aug 1866, is available as an attachment. "John Grierson Broadfoot, schoolmaster, was found "Guilty" of forging an acceptance to a bill of exchange for £355, and sent to prison for three years." (The Argus 20 Aug 1866). In 1874 listed in his mother's death cert as John 42 years. Marr 6 Feb 1875 (the day before his father's death, and probably at his insistence according to family story) at South Murchison, Victoria, Australia (Vic reg 1095) to Margaret DOCHERTY, born c1850 at Flooding Creek, Sale, Victoria, Australia, died 24 Aug 1887 at Sale. John did not receive anything from his father's Will. John died 22 Dec 1877 at Rushworth, Victoria (Vic reg 12236), buried Rushworth Cem. John G. Broadfoot was mentioned in the newspaper report of the death of his sister Grace in 1928. |

GRIERSON Born 2 Apr 1844 rear of Long & Co, Chemists (where Alexandra Theatre was built), Bourke St, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (Vic reg 9982/32986). (Date given in Family Bible entry.) Known as John (3) Grierson. Bapt 5 May 1844 in Melbourne (ref Baptism notice) by William Schofield, Wesleyan Minister. His occupation was Master Printer, with church and musical interests. Grew up at Diamond Creek, then on Plenty River, and then Hoddle St Collingwood (refer to Notes and Obituary). Marr 30 Jul 1874 at St Stephen's C of E, Richmond, Victoria (Vic reg 2675) to Annie Elizabeth BURTON; John was in 31st year, residence Richmond, Printing Machinist, bachelor, born Bourke Street, Melbourne; Annie was in her 21st year, residence Richmond, spinster, born Melbourne, Victoria; witnesses Emily B. de Groot, Thomas Burton; Annie was a minor and married with consent of her father (ref original Marriage Certificate on file). "Grierson - Burton. - On the 30th ult., at St Stephen's Church, Richmond, by the Rev. C. T. Perks, John Grierson, of Burnley Street, to Annie Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Thomas Burton, of 182 Bridge-road." (Ref The Argus 10 Aug 1874) She was born 2 May 1854 at Plenty Road, Merri Creek, Victoria, Australia (Vic reg 1372). She was daughter of Thomas Burton and Elizabeth Smith, see Burton tree for more details. There is a family story that she taught Dame Nellie Melba the piano; Nellie was born in 1861, it is possible that this is true, say from 1871 (when Annie was 17 and Nellie Mitchell was 10) but it is not mentioned in the recent biography of Nellie Melba, who moved to London for her singing career by 1886. In approximately 1883, John left Sands & McDougall where he had been from about the age of 14, to join the business Watt & Co. Unfortunately he lost his capital in that business and resigned in 1887, rejoining S&M. In 1887 they were living at 440 Church St, South Richmond. Annie died 18 Oct 1888 at Richmond, Victoria (Vic reg 15403), buried Boroondara Cemetery, Kew. "GRIERSON. - On the 18th inst., at her residence, Church street, South Richmond, Annie Elizabeth, the dearly loved wife of John Grierson, and eldest daughter of the late Thomas Burton, formerly of Bridge-road, Richmond, aged 34 years. So loved, so mourned." (The Argus Fri 19 Oct 1888, Trove) The memorial is as follows: 'In loving remembrance of THOMAS JAMES BURTON, late of Richmond died 19th April 1884 - Aged 56 years. Also - his wife ELIZABETH (nee SMITH) BURTON who died at Auburn 31st July 1904 - Aged 64 years "noble hearted always." Also - their daughter ANNIE ELIZABETH (nee BURTON) GRIERSON who died 18th October 1888 - Aged 34 years.' See the photo of the grave on the Photo Page. See reference in Mary Burgess' will to his inheritance of the family bible. Lived at 44 Edinburgh St, Richmond (1889) and at 89 Tyler St, Preston (1915). Also lived at Grattan St Hawthorn and 16 Wimble St Northcote (1920). John died 21 Nov 1922 at Northcote, Victoria (Vic reg 14322), buried at Coburg Cemetery (Meth A 312) with his father and his niece Florence May Lewis. His will/probate is available (186/338) and is reproduced here. He left the Family Bible to his son John, his watch and chain to William, his piano to Florence, and his household furnishings to Bertha. Refer to his obituary written by John Burton Grierson. Ref The Argus 23 Nov 1922: "Deaths. Grierson. On the 21st November, at 16 Wimble Street, Northcote, John Grierson, loving father of John, William, Florence (Mrs Moseley), and Bertha; for 50 years in the employ of Sands and McDougall Ltd., and first president for five consecutive years of the A.N.A., Richmond; aged 78 years. "THOMAS - THOMAS. On the 8th March, 1916 at Rosebrook, Port Fairy, Walter, eldest son of the late Cr. Moses Thomas, of Mayfield, Mernda, and his wife, Janet Thomas, to Jean Barclay, youngest daughter of the late David and Mary Thomas, of Blair Athol, Rosebrook, Port Fairy." (ref Trove, The Argus, Melbourne, Vic, Monday 10 April 1916) The Evelyn Observer and Bourke East Record on Fri 24 March 1916 included an extensive article about the wedding and the celebrations just prior to it. See the attachment. See photos of Walter alone, Walter and Ruth, and Walter and Jane including group photos which were taken on a later date. The following article appeared in The Herald on Thur 22 Oct 1831: "OLDEST COUNCILLOR IN VICTORIA. Walter Thomas is 88. The most picturesque figure at the Municipal Association now meeting in Melbourne is Walter Thomas, who is 88 years of age, and the oldest foundation member of the association. As spry as many a man 20 years his junior, Mr Thomas, white-whiskered, with a shade over his right eye, bends over and fastens a bright remaining orb on the president, determined to catch his eye, so as to make a speech on the motion before the Chair. He is alert, businesslike, interested. During a pause in the proceedings he talked. He represents Whittlesea, where he has lived for many years. In all his 88 years he has never ventured further afield than Adelaide, but by staying at home he has accumulated a store of home knowledge that has made him useful both in the council and on the bench. ROMANTIC MARRIAGE. His memories go far back. As a boy he was educated at the old Scotch School, which later became Scotch College. His father and mother were Scotch, his mother being born in the very house at Mossgiel where Bobby Burns first saw the light. [Note, this is not true of his mother, but his father may have been born in that area of Scotland.] His father came here as a boy and ran away to get married. He was found in his youthful romantic dream by a pursuing uncle, who asked him what on earth he married on. "On 7/6 a week", replied the young groom, "and we're saving half-a-croon o't." That blood is dauntless, so it was little wonder that the child of this marriage should have been both successful and tenacious. His father was a teacher in the Scotch School, and Mr Thomas relates that in 1911 he paid a chance visit to a cottage in the country on business, when who should come to the door but Robert Morrison, of the famous clan of Scotch teachers, who had retired to a farm. BORN IN COLLINGWOOD. Walter, for more than 50 years, has been councillor in the one riding of the one shire in which he has lived since he was 7. "I was born in the aristocratic spot known as Collingwood Flat," he said with a twinkle. He learnt his Bench lore from the late Mr O'Callaghan, "who knew more than most police magistrates," he says. He sat on the Bench when Adela Pankhurst, in her violent days, was up before him. For 55 years he has served on the Boards of Advice of three State schools. His [half] brother, Lewis Thomas, is in charge of the Children's Welfare Department. " Walter died 15 Sep 1932 at Whittlesea, Victoria (Vic reg 10795). Ref The Argus 16 Sep 1932: "THOMAS - on the 15th September, at The Poplars, Mernda, Walter, relict of the late Ruth Thomas, and much loved father of Annie (Mrs Nicholson), Janet (Mrs Stanborough, deceased), Walter, Ruth (Mrs Muir), Amy (Mrs Walpole), Marion (Mrs Killmister) and Bessie (Mrs Leach), in his 88th year. - Until the day break, and the shadows flee away." Ref The Argus 16 Sep 1932: "THOMAS - on the 15th September, at The Poplars, Mernda, Councillor Walter Thomas, J.P., beloved husband of Jean Barclay, and eldest son of the late Moses Thomas, in his 88th year. A colonist of 87 years. - At rest." Ref The Argus 16 Sep 1932: "THOMAS - the Friends of the late COUNCILLOR WALTER THOMAS, J.P., are informed that his remains will be interred in the Whittlesea Cemetery. The funeral will leave his residence, The Poplars, Mernda, this day (Friday) Sept 16th, at 2.30pm, arriving at the cemetery about 3 o'clock. W.G.Apps and Sons Pty Ltd". According to local records of the Leader Newspaper," the obituary in the Leader following the passing of Cr. Walter Thomas, of "The Poplars", Mernda, aged 88 years on September 25, 1932 revealed that he had written several articles for the Leader under the nom de plume "Mernda". Along with the various positions mentioned in his articles, he also gave a 55 years service to Whittlesea Shire Council, was co-founder of the Whittlesea Show Society and a long-serving member of the Board of Advice and later School Committee of Mernda State School. " Jane died 1950 at Cheltenham (Vic reg 3369). |

The death occurred somewhat suddenly at the residence of her son on Saturday morning of Mrs. Janet McLeod, relict of the late John McLeod, formerly of Lorne, who predeceased her by 26 years. Mrs. McLeod, who was born at Rosebrook 83 years ago, was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Thomas. She went with her husband to Lorne and then removed to Chocolyn, where they carried on dairying pursuits. Mrs. McLeod followed a rather secluded life, but those who knew her spoke very highly of her excellent character. They had been at Chocolyn for 16 years. To mourn their sad loss she leaves a family of two sons, Angus and David, and one daughter, Mary. The funeral, which took place to the Camperdown Cemetery yesterday afternoon, was well attended, the Rev. P.H.Widmer conducting the burial service. .." Inserted by his loving wife and family.)" "OBITUARY. IN MEMORIAM. MR. MOSES COCKERELL. There passes away at Mernda on Friday, July 19, a life-long resident of the Mernda district in the person of the late Moses Cockerell, a member of one of the oldest families in the district. The deceased was a native of the district and an inspector under the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works at the time of his death. He took ill on March 18 and died on July 19 at his residence at Separation, Mernda. He was for many years in the board's employ, and had been an inspector for eight years, being kept on until he was 71 years of age. The board behaved liberally to their old and valued employe. The deceased was married, and leaves three sons and three daughters to mourn his death. He was a very old and respected member of the Loyal Cornucopia Lodge, M.U.I.O.O.F., of which lodge his father was one of the first members. The deceased was probably the best liked of the numerous employes of the board, as whether as a worker or an officer he gained the esteem and respect of those with whom he came in contact. His funeral on Sunday, July 21, was very largely attended. He was buried in the Yan Yean general cemetery, the coffin-bearers being Messrs. G. Cockerell, T. Smith, C. Vipont and M. Hannuske (nephews). The pall-bearers were Messrs. James Thomas, D Macdonald, A.V. Wood, Albert Owens, James Giddens and A. Jones. Mr. Peters, the Presbyterian missionary, officiated at the grave, and the beautiful and impressive service of the M.U.I.O.O.F. was efficiently and capably read by Mr. James Thomas, the Noble Grand of the lodge." Birth reg of John Smith 1859 at Templestowe, son of Thos Smith & Ann Moffatt (Vic reg 1662/1859). Death reg of John Smith 1923 at Richmond, son of Thomas Smith & Ann Moffat, born Templestowe, age 63 (Vic reg 3220/1923). John died 24 Jan 1923 and was buried at Yan Yean Cemetery on 26 Jan. "In Memoriam. (By Mernda.) Once more our district has been bereft of one of its best-known residents in the person of John Smith, the well known farmer of Rosehill, Mernda. The deceased gentleman had not been in good health for some time, and was recently taken seriously ill and removed to a private hospital in Richmond, where, despite the ablest medical skill, he passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, January 24. He was a native of Victoria, having been born in Templestowe 63 years ago, and went with his parents to Mernda. In 1884 he married Miss Janet Cockerell (a neighbour's daughter), and had a family of three sons and four daughters, all of whom, except two, reside at home. The sons - Thomas, Leslie and Aubrey - were associated with their father in extensive farming. Three daughters reside at home, and one is married to Mr Stephen Whitter, jun., of Koo-wee-rup, the son of an old resident of Mernda. The late Mr Smith was noted for his hospitality and kindly nature, and rendered valuable service to neighbors when they had sick cows and horses. He was a kind husband and fond father, and was for many years a member of the Board of Management of the Presbyterian Church, in which the family took an active interest. The remains of the deceased were interred in the Yan Yean Cemetery on January 26, when the respect of the district was shown by the large attendance at the funeral, there being about fifty vehicles in addition to horsemen. The religious services were conducted by the Rev. J. Y. Raff (pastor of the Mernda Presbyterian Church) and the Rev. H. Scott Morton, a former minister of the church and close friend of Mr Smith and his family. The services, both at the house and the grave, were very touching, and the church was well represented, the minister (the Rev. J. Raff) and the three elders being present, viz., Messrs J.R.Gibson, E. Smith and Walter Thomas. Although Mr Smith's soul has gone to his Creator, the mormory of the kindly actions he did in his life will not soon be forgotten in the district. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved family." (Trove, Advertiser Hurstbridge, Fri 2 Feb 1923) Janet died 4 Feb 1932 at Preston, Victoria (Vic reg 3269), buried 9 Feb 1932 at Yan Yean Cemetery. "SMITH. - On the 4th February, at her residence, Crispe-street, Preston, N.19, Janet, widow of the late John Smith, of Mernda; loving mother of Thomas, Kitty, Beatrice (Mrs. S. V. Whitta), Leslie, Janet (Mrs. R. A. Smith), Aubrey and Ruth (Mrs. Kiernan), aged 72 years." (ref Trove, The Age, Saturday 6 Feb 1932) "MERNDA. Death has recently claimed two very old residents of the district, the first being Mrs Janet Smith, late of "Rose Hill," Mernda, who was born in Mernda and lived all her life there until about three months ago when her home, "Rose Hill," was sold and she went to Preston to live. She was buried at the Yan Yean General Cemetery and a special service was held in the Mayfield Presbyterian Church of which the deceased lady had been a close attendant and a member during her long life. The Rev. Mr.Anderson, of Preston, and the Rev. I. G. Raff, a former minister of the Mernda Church assisted by Mr. Mitchell, the missionary in charge, gave special addresses testifying to the good Christian life of the deceased lady and her never-failing kindness to the church." Ethel is given the middle name 'Florence' in some documentation, but in the marriage certificate of her son Charles, where asked for full maiden name, her name is given as 'Ethel Masters'. A description of the wedding follows: "COCKERELL - MASTERS. A pretty country wedding took place at Separation township, Morang, on Christmas Day. The bridegroom was Mr. Charles Cockerell, of Campbellfield, youngest son of Mr. John Cockerell, of South Yan Yean, and the bride, Miss Ethel Masters, sixth daughter of Mr. F.W. Masters, of Gunbower. The ceremony, which took place at the residence of the bride's grandmother, Mrs. Masters, sen., was performed in the presence of a fair number of guests by the Rev. R.A. Green, B.A., of the Morang Presbyterian Church. The bride was very prettily dressed in a costume of soft cream material trimmed with silk and wore a wreath and veil. The pleasing duties of bridesmaid and groomsman were satisfactorily carried out by Miss Cockerell and Mr. A. Bate respectively.
